Suddenly Last Summer is the world premiere of a new opera composed by 2023 MacArthur Fellow Courtney Bryan, with a libretto by Gideon Lester and Daniel Fish based on Tennessee Williams's play about the wealthy Venable family, a mysterious death in Spain, and a mother's desperate attempt to silence the truth through lobotomy. The production is directed by Daniel Fish, with music direction by Nathan Koci, and features Mikaela Bennett as Catherine Holly, Tina Benko as Mrs. Venable, and Branden Lindsay as Dr. Cukrowicz, with the Young People's Chorus of New York City as the choral ensemble. Miriam Silverman and Nick Westrate appear on video as Mrs. Holly and George, respectively. The opera is co-produced by Opera Philadelphia and is part of Bard SummerScape 2026.
