Lehman Center for the Performing Arts and GOYA FOODS presents NOCHE CALIENTE - A Night to Remember as three of Latin music’s legends and pioneers, EDDIE SANTIAGO, PAQUITO GUZMÁN, and JOHNNY RIVERA, perform a concert of both Salsa Romantica and Salsa Dura classics on Saturday, March 24th, 2018 at 8pm. Produced by Lehman Center and Leo Tizol.
Lehman Center for the Performing Arts is on the campus of Lehman College/CUNY at 250 Bedford Park Boulevard West, Bronx, NY 10468. Tickets for NOCHE CALIENTE on Saturday, March 24th, 2018 at 8pm are $100*VIP, $65, $55, and $50 and can be purchased by calling the Lehman Center box office at 718-960-8833 (Monday through Friday, 10am–5pm, and beginning at 12 noon on the day of the concert), or through online access at www.LehmanCenter.org. *VIP Reception: The HAVANA CAFÉ, Havana Club Rum and Lehman Center special VIP pre-concert wine, beer, Havana Club Rum & hors d’oeuvres reception will start at 6:30pm. VIP tickets include the reception and the best seats in the house. Lehman Center is accessible by #4 or D train to Bedford Park Blvd. and is off the Saw Mill River Parkway and the Major Deegan Expressway. Low-cost on-site parking available for $5.
EDDIE SANTIAGO, born in Toa Alta, Puerto Rico, began performing at a young age and spent two years with El Conjunto Chaney, singing the band’s hit “Detalles.” Going solo and forming his own band in 1986, he gained international acclaim with “Lluvia,” which went to the top of the charts and helped spawn the Tropical music sub-genre of salsa romántica. His success continued with such hits as “Tu me quemas,” “Antídoto y veneno,” “Que locura enamorarme de tí,” and “Insaciable.” Between the mid-‘80s and the early ‘90s, six of Santiago’s albums reached #1 on the Tropical music charts. His romantic lyrics combined with his sensual interpretation and melodious voice has made him one of the most popular salseros of all time. He has released over 25 albums, many of which have gone gold and platinum. In 1999 he released Celebration: Epic Duets, joined by Latin music stars Victor Manuelle, Huey Dunbar and Elvis Crespo. The album was named one of the best recordings of 1999 by the National Foundation for Popular Culture. His 2004 CD Después del silencio, nominated for a GRAMMY in the Tropical Music” category, produced five radio hits: “Loco por tu amor,” “No me hables mal de ella,” “Falsa,” “Todavía hay swing” and “Llover sobre mojado.” Santiago’s latest CD is 2011’s Reyes de la Salsa with Lalo Rodríguez.
PAQUITO GUZMÁN, one of the greatest Salsa Romántica vocalists, was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico. In 1959, at the age of twenty, he moved to the Bronx, NY, and went to work in a record shop, hoping to make connections in the music industry. Less than a year later he met Joe Quijano who hired him as the lead singer for his Caribbean pachanga band Joint Cachana, that also included Bobby Valentín on trumpet. Within three years, Joint Cachana recorded seven albums with Guzmán as vocalist including Dance to the Bossa Nova, the Mambo, the Cha Cha Cha and The World’s Most Exciting Latin American Orchestra and Revue, the latter record selling 1,000 copies in the first 6 months alone and has become a cult classic often referred to as “The Nostros Album”. Firmly established as a bolerista in the new “salsa” movement, Guzmán returned to Puerto Rico in 1962 to sing vocals with Chamaco Ramirez in the Tommy Olivencia band, recording seven albums. Mintiendo Se Gana Mas (1977) marked his first of over twenty albums as a solo artist, and during the 1980’s he was widely popular singing in the Salsa Romántica style reaching a high point in sales with his 1986 album Salsa The Best Ballads. In 1994 he released Oro Salsero which featured the hit songs “25 Rosas”, “Y Es Que Llegaste Tú”, and “Vivir A Solas”. And in 1999, Los Mejores Baladas en Salsa, an album of popular ballads translated into slow tempo salsa was debuted, which included the hits “Esa Mujer” and “Ser Amantes”. 2008 saw the release of Guzmán’s well regarded album The Greatest Salsa Ever and his latest record, Iconos: 25 Exitos, was released in 2013.
JOHNNY RIVERA is an American salsa singer of Puerto Rican descent that was born and raised in the Bronx. Influenced by his uncle, salsa vocalist Adalberto Santiago, he briefly moved to Puerto Rico after graduating high school, and began singing with a local salsa group. Returning to New York City, Rivera began studying music and singing techniques with Johnny Colón’s Orchestra and famous East Harlem Music School, and he also joined his Uncle Adalberto’s orchestra. His recording debut came in a 1983 compilation album called Noche Caliente-II, singing "Terciopelo y Piedra". Rivera then joined one of the most popular orchestras of the time, Grupo Fascinación for four years, recording three albums with them: Fascinating Sounds (1983), Tiburón (1985) and Salsa Vice (1986). Leaving to be the lead singer for Conjunto Clasico, he sang on two of that group’s albums, Clásico 88 (1988), and Más Clásico Que Nunca (1989). Going solo in 1991, he released Y Ahora de Verdad, which was recorded in New York and Puerto Rico, produced by Sergio George, and reached #5 on the Billboard Tropical Album chart. Rivera’s sensitive approach to romantic salsa material, as evidenced by the hit "Necesito Una Amiga", his cover of Frankie Valli’s “My Eyes Adored You”, and the popular salsa versions of "Esa Chica Es Mia" and "Como Fui A Enamorarme De Ti", was well received. His second album, Encuentro Casual (1992), featured the songs "Loco de Amor", "Te Regalaré", and "Lo Mejor de Mi". Then in 1993, he released Cuando Parara La Lluvia, which included three hit singles- "Cuando Parara La Lluvia", "Por Eso Esta Conmigo", and "Voy a Conquistar tu Amor", rose to #11 on the Billboard Tropical Album chart, went Platinum, and Rivera was awarded the 1994 Paoli Prize for Album of the Year and the Diplo Prize for Orquesta Revelación del Año. Over the years, Rivera has continued to successfully record, both as a solo artist and in collaboration with greats such as Humberto Ramírez, Ray Sepúlveda, Jerry Rivera, Tito Nieves, Isidro Infantes, Charlie Aponte, India, Domingo Quiñones, Tito Puente, Herb Albert, Tony Vega, and Marc Anthony. Rivera’s latest releases are El Noble de la Salsa (2011) and 2016’s Salsa Legends, which rose to #7 on the Billboard Tropical Album chart.
