The Red House Arts Center in Syracuse, NY is proud to present the critically-acclaimed musical "Dreamgirls," directed by Stephen Svoboda, December 3 to December 19.

Based on the show business successes of R&B acts like The Shirelles, The Supremes, and James Brown, the musical "Dreamgirls" follows the story of a female trio from Chicago called "The Dreams" as they become musical superstars. The original Broadway production, with book and lyrics by Tom Eyen and music by Henry Krieger, opened in 1981 and received 13 Tony Award nominations. A hugely successful film adaptation, featuring Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce Knowles, Jamie Foxx, and Eddie Murphy, hit cinemas in 2006 and was nominated for 8 Academy Awards. Broadway's Jennifer Holiday and Hollywood's Jennifer Hudson both took home awards for their renditions of "And I'm Telling You (I'm Not Going)" on stage and screen respectively.

The Red House Arts Center's "Dreamgirls" features a cast of professional actors, local actors, and teens from New York City and Syracuse including Joan Anderson (Redhouse's "Medea"), Stephfond Brunson, Cathy Butler, David Kaverman (Redhouse's "Carousel"), Briana Maia, and Temar Underwood (Redhouse's "Oliver"). Local actress Tamar Smithers takes on the legendary role of Effie White.

This production is part of The Redhouse Theatre Experience Program which is based in the theatrical tradition of mentorship and apprenticeship. The production combines professional actors, designers, and directors working as mentors to regional artists and targeted underserved community performers. The cast includes students from Hillside Family of Agencies and Syracuse City School District.

"Dreamgirls" features music direction by Patrick Burns, choreography by Erin Lafferty, set and properties design by Andrea Ball, costume design by Nikki Delhomme, lighting design by Chuan-Chi Chan, and sound design by Anthony Vadala.
