Everyone's favorite paranormal forensic pathologist is set to return to cable television for the first time in a decade.

Gillian Anderson, who played Dr. Dana Scully on THE X-FILES, has officially signed on for a recurring role on NBC's upcoming drama HANNIBAL. Entertainment Weekly first broke the news this evening.

Anderson is set to play the therapist of infamous psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen).

"Every therapist needs their own head examined and we are ecstatic that Gillian Anderson has chosen HANNIBALto mark her return to American television after 10 years to portray Dr. Lecter's personal psychiatrist," said series creator Bryan Fuller said in a statement. "Her intelligence and sophistication, not to mention her pedigree of ground-breaking TV, make her the perfect actress to match wits and psychological manipulations with one of the greatest villains of pop culture. I couldn't be more excited."

Anderson joins an already incredible diverse and respected group of actors who will make appearances on the show. Those featured include Hugh Dancy, Laurence Fishburne, Eddie Izzard, Molly Shannon, Ellen Green, and Raul Esparza.

NBC's official synosis of HANNIBAL follows:

One of the most fascinating literary characters comes to life on television for the first time: psychiatrist-turned-serial killer, Dr. Hannibal Lecter. In this new drama from Bryan Fuller ("Pushing Daisies," "Heroes"), based on the characters from Thomas Harris' classic novels, we see where this incredible story began.

Will Graham is a gifted criminal profiler who is on the hunt for a serial killer with the FBI. Graham's unique way of thinking gives him the astonishing ability to empathize with anyone - even psychopaths. He seems to know what makes them tick. But when the mind of the twisted killer he's pursuing is too complicated for even Will to comprehend, he enlists the help of Dr. Lecter, one of the premier psychiatric minds in the country. Armed with the uncanny expertise of the brilliant doctor, Will and Hannibal (known as a serial killer only to the audience) form a brilliant partnership and it seems there's no villain they can't catch.
