The Orpheum to Screen MEAN GIRLS with Memphis Roller Derby, 8/8

By:

The Orpheum continues its exciting Summer Movie Series with MEAN GIRLS on Thursday, August 8 at 7:00 PM. Pre-movie activities include a special appearance by Memphis' ultimate mean girls - the Memphis Roller Derby - led by hometown blogger Kerry Crawford, author of the I Love Memphis Blogand longtime member of the Memphis Roller Derby league.

Locally instituted in 2006, Memphis Roller Derby is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization completely run by skaters and volunteers. The league is made up of 3 home teams, Angels of Death, Priskilla Prezleys, and Women of Mass Destruction; and one all-star travel team, the Memphis Hustlin' Rollers. For MEAN GIRLS, Memphis Roller Derby will host a live on-stage skating demonstration before the film.

"We are looking forward to being at the Orpheum for MEAN GIRLS," said Emily Ward-Markle, the League's Public Relations representative. "If you can't play nice, play roller derby."

Tina Fey from Saturday Night Live wrote and appears in MEAN GIRLS, a comedy about the alternately funny and terrifying pecking order among teenage girls. Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) is a 15-year-old girl who has spent most of her life in Africa. When her family relocates to the United States, Cady finds herself attending a high school in suburban Illinois, where she gets a crash course in the various sub-strata of the student body: the jocks, the cheerleaders, the stoners, the "cool" kids, and so on. Much to her surprise, Cady finds herself embraced by a clique of rich and popular girls known to outsiders as "the Plastics."

The Orpheum Theatre's 2013 Summer Movie Series, presented for a second year by Orion Federal Credit Union, commemorates the theatre's 85th Anniversary with the best-loved films of the past eight decades. The series will continue through August 9th at the Orpheum Theatre.

Included in the Summer Movie Series are Thursday Night Chick Flicks, Friday Night Classics, and Family Matinees. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Packages of ten tickets are available for $50. Groups of 10 or more can enjoy special rates by contacting Sinclaire Montgomery atmontgomery@orpheum-memphis.com or 901.529.4226.
