Country music star Taylor Swift has joined the cast of THE GIVER, according to The New York Post's Page Six. The singer joins previously announced cast members Meryl Streep, Katie Holmes and Jeff Bridges.

The film is an adaptation of the hit young adult novel THE GIVER by Lois Lowry. Scheduled to hit theaters on August 15, 2014, the drama will be directed by Philip Noyce from a script by Michael Mitnick. It centers on "a boy who learns about the real world in a Utopian community without war, pain, suffering - or choices."

Sources tell the Post that Swift was offered a supporting role by Harvey Weinstein when she appeared at the Toronto Film Festival for the premiere of "One Chance," for which she penned the song "Sweeter Than Fiction" with fun.'s Jack Antonoff

"Harvey introduced Taylor to Brenton in Toronto because they were both going to be in the film," said a source.

Swift's previous film credits include "Valentine's Day" opposite Taylor Lautner.
