Smule, creators of top-ranking and awesome, addictive social music-making apps including Magic Piano, Ocarina, I Am T-Pain, Guitar! and Sing! Karaoke, announced today that it is teaming up with the one and only Reading Rainbow, celebrating its 30th anniversary this year! You know it from 26 years on PBS, and the next generation knows it from the all-new and very popular reading app with an on-the-go library of hundreds of books and video field trips. One lucky person will win the chance to star in a video featured in the Reading Rainbow app with none other than the host of the legendary kids television series and renowned actor, LeVar Burton. Roots? Star Trek: The Next Generation? Big Bang Theory? Community? Perception? Need we say more?

In honor of this stellar collaboration, Smule and Reading Rainbow are hosting a contest via the Sing! Karaoke app. Participants are invited to record their very own rendition of Reading Rainbow Theme Song in Smule's Sing! Karaoke app to enter for a chance to fly in the sky -- to Los Angeles with a guest -- to star in a video field trip with LeVar Burton.

"Who wouldn't want to meet LeVar Burton?" said Jeffrey C. Smith, co-founder and CEO of Smule. "We're thrilled our community of users -- young and old -- will not only be able to give 'Butterfly in the Sky' a whirl in our Sing! Karaoke app, but also enter for a chance to meet LeVar Burton. We think that's pretty awesome."

Says LeVar Burton: "After 35 years of being in the public eye, despite the global phenomenons of Roots and Star Trek, it is Reading Rainbow that I most proud of. People tell me every day how they grew up on the show and learned to love reading because of it, and many of them spontaneously burst into song! I am thrilled that starting today with Smule's Sing! app, users can now join me in a 'Butterfly in the Sky' duet, or sing it by themselves and share it with the whole world. But you don't have to take my word for it."

With over 11 million downloads and an average of 175,000 active users daily, Smule's Sing! Karaoke app allows users to sing and record a song from its extensive (and constantly updated) library, then invite friends to join in and turn that solo act into a duet -- and so on and so forth -- making it one global karaoke party. In addition to this contest, Smule will be updating its apps for the highly anticipated iOS7 release. The update will allow the app to be more personal and will have a clean and more collaborative feel, so the community can easily connect and join in on all the fun.

Ready to enter? Here's how:

  • Download the Smule Sing! Karaoke app (Free on iOS and Android)
  • Click on Reading Rainbow Theme Song and start recording -- you can even sing a duet with LeVar!
  • Save your performance and enter it in the contest using the hashtag #ReadingRainbow
  • Favorite your entries and wait to see if you have been selected as the winner!

The contest will end at 11:59 p.m. PDT on September 12, 2013. For more information on contest rules and prizes, visit: bit.ly/SmuleReadingRainbow. To learn more about Smule or Reading Rainbow, visit Smule.com or RRKidz.com.
