Documentary CHANGING BOUNDARIES: THE HISTORY OF SAN JOSE Premieres Tonight

Norman Kline Productions and CreaTV San Jose will host the World Premiere of Changing Boundaries: The History of San Jose tonight, January 22, 2015, at the California Theatre in San Jose. The Ken Burns-style feature-length production tells the story of the working people, political leaders and dreamers who built the City of San Jose.

Narrated by actor Peter Coyote, and featuring an original musical score by Grammy nominee Robert Berry of Soundtek Studios, this first-of-its-kind documentary features interviews with key historical figures, from farmers to civic leaders, including Tom McEnery, Blanca Alvarado and Norm Mineta. Other notable interviewees include historians Terry Christensen, Nannette Regua and Steven Millner.

Produced by Norman Kline Productions and CreaTV San Jose and directed by Tricia Creason-Valencia, the film's production includes a key collaboration with History San Jose, which provided archival photography and documents.

"There has never been a feature-length documentary on the history of San Jose," says Norman Kline, the project creator. "San Jose has an amazing history with plenty of ups and downs along the way, BUT ALWAYS displaying a can-do spirit that helped change the social, economic and political boundaries of the city and the world."

Director and Producer Tricia Creason-Valencia has just completed filming on the project, capturing more than 22 interviews and countless locations, documents, images and objects, and is immersed in the final edit. "The hardest job is to decide what not to include," Creason-Valencia said, noting that the documentary was going to tell some very dramatic stories that highlight San Jose's role in American history. "The joy is seeing the progress that emerges when people band together to work for social change after the darkest, most disturbing moments in our history."

Suzanne St. John-Crane, Executive Director, CreaTV San Jose believes that this is the kind of project that CreaTV was designed for. "CreaTV San Jose is honored to provide the production facilities, staffing and fiscal sponsorship for this project. We look forward to producing an exceptional documentary worthy of our great city," she says.

The project was made possible with the partnership of the two nonprofits and financial backing of the wider community. Funding was received from businesses, civic groups and individuals. Major sponsors included the Knight Foundation, Cisco Systems, Silicon Valley Community Foundation and the Sobrato Family Foundation.

The premiere of Changing Boundaries: The History of San Jose is open to the public. Tickets are available at two prices: $25 for general admission to the show only, and $50 for the VIP reception and the show.

Award-winning filmmaker Tricia Creason-Valencia is founder of San Jose-based FLACAFILMS. The last documentary she produced, Stable Life, was nominated for an Emmy, won "Best Documentary" at the Cinequest Film Festival and aired on KQED Television. She has taught film/video production and documentary filmmaking in the Social Documentation department at U.C. Santa Cruz, San Francisco State University, Drexel University and in collaboration with several youth-related non-profit organizations. Tricia is a PBS/CPB Producer's Academy Fellow (2008) and a Latino Producers Academy Fellow (2008).

CreaTV San Jose is contributing production facilities, staffing and fiscal sponsorship for this project.
