Bette Midler has pulled out of the cast of the untitled film centered around Phil Spector. According to Deadline.com, Midler suffered from a herniated disc and left the film because of "doctor's orders". HBO is in the process of recasting her role.

Midler would have joined stage and screen veterans Jeffrey Tambor and Al Pacino. The film is written and directed by David Mamet, who counts among his many writing credits the Tony nominated and Pulitzer Award-winning Glengarry Glen Ross, and the Oscar winner The Verdict.

The 2003 shooting death of actress Lana Clarkson in his Alhambra, California home led to record producer Phil Spector being charged with murder in the second degree. After a 2007 mistrial, he was convicted in 2009 and given a prison sentence of 19 years to life.

Bette Midler's first starring role in the feature film, The Rose, garnered two Golden Globe Awards, a Grammy for the film's title song and a best actress Oscar nomination. Additional films include Down and Out in Beverly Hills, Ruthless People, Outrageous Fortune, Big Business and her most popular movie, Beaches. Forty years, four Grammys, four Golden Globes, three Emmys, a Tony Award and tons of record-breaking performances since she hit the scene, the "Divine Miss M" is still going strong.
