Tonys host, Broadway and on-screen star Alan Cumming will lead FLORENT, based on the life of colorful New York City restauranteur and AIDS activist Florent Morellet, on Showtime.

Deadline writes that the series, a passion project for Cumming that started out with SundanceTV last year, has migrated to the network.

Written by MAD MEN's Patricia Resnick and directed by THE GOOD WIFE's Rosemary Rodriguez, FLORENT is "inspired by the true story of Morellet, who in the early 80s opened a restaurant in NY's wild and woolly Meatpacking District."

The dark comedy "will explore the light and dark of that time, as well as the craziness of a place that become a destination for everyone from NY's literati, to the neighborhood hookers and hustlers, to the NYPD, to the burgeoning LGBT community -- all through the eyes of Florent...with advice from the real restauranteur, himself."

Alan Cumming recently hosted The TONY AWARDS with fellow Broadway diva Kristin Chenoweth. He also just finished a Broadway run as 'Emcee' in CABARET. The actor has also appeared on Broadway in MACBETH, THE THREEPENNY OPERA, DESIGN FOR LIVING and the original Broadway run of CABARET (which earned him a Tony in 1998). Among his London stage appearances are HAMLET, ACCIDENTAL DEATH OF AN ANARCHIST (for which he received an Olivier Award), BENT, and THE BACCHAE.

Cumming's best-known film roles include his performances in GOLDENEYE, SPY KIDS, and X2. Cumming also introduces Masterpiece Mystery! for PBS and appears in the Emmy-nominated role of 'Eli Gold' on THE GOOD WIFE.
