The Metropolitan Opera follows its immensely successful season opener, Das Rheingold, with a classic tale of politics and power, Boris Godunov. Mussorgsky's masterwork will be broadcast at Middlebury's Town Hall Theater on Sunday, October 24, at 1 pm.

The subject is the historical Russian Ruler, Boris Godunov, who reigned as Tsar c.1600, during an early phase of Russian political upheaval. Mussorgsky tells the story in epic terms, with a huge cast and thundering choruses, which makes this production a showcase for the Met's world-renowned chorus.

At its opening in 1874 the success of Boris Godunov was so complete that the composer had to take twenty curtain calls.

René Pape plays the title role. Valery Gergiev, currently the premiere interpreter of Russian opera, conducts. This is one of several new productions on the Met schedule this season, directed by Stephen Wadsworth.

The Met HD broadcast of Boris Godunov will be presented on Sunday, October 24, at 1 pm, at Middlebury's Town Hall Theater. Tickets are $22, and may be purchased at www.townhalltheater.org, 802 382-9222, at the THT Box Office (Mon-Sun, noon-5 pm) and at the door, if available.
