Woodstock the Concert Set for Poway Center for the Performing Arts, 11/22

"An Aquarian Exposition: Three Days of Peace and Music" in 1969 came to be known simply as "Woodstock," the name of the town 43 miles from Max Yasgur's 600-acre dairy farm in the Catskills of New York. On November 22, the Poway Center for the Performing Arts presents a live tribute to Woodstock, which became the definitive nexus for the counterculture generation. The event will feature local San Diego musicians Eve Selis, Tim Flannery, Berkley Hart, Back to the Garden Band, and dozens of special guests. Surprises are guaranteed!

This pivotal moment in popular music history created legends, like Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Sly & The Family Stone, Joe Cocker, Crosby Stills, Nash & Young, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Richie Havens, Arlo Guthrie, Ravi Shankar (who played through the rain), Joan Baez (who was six months pregnant), Canned Heat, The Band, Grateful Dead, Ten Years After, John Sebastian, Country Joe MacDonald and Janis Joplin. Organizers sold 186,000 advanced tickets (at $18 each) and expected about 200,000 attendees. By the time Woodstock was extended into a fourth day, 400,000 people had shown up to hear 32 musical acts. The organizers gave up on collecting admission or putting up a fence. Later, Woodstock brought about a documentary film, several soundtracks, reunion concerts and a museum.

Tickets to "Woodstock the Concert" range from $34 to $44 for adults and $29 for seniors. GEICO Youth Tickets are $14 (age 18 and under) with the purchase of an adult ticket. Box office hours are noon to 5 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays, and two hours before curtain.

Tim Flannery is beloved, not only as a former San Diego Padre for 11 seasons, or as third base coach for the 2010 and 2012 World Series Champion San Francisco Giants, but as the singer "Flan," as his family and friends call him. He has sung with Jackson Browne, Garth Brooks, Dwight Yoakum and Willie Nelson. With a dozen solo albums under his belt, he takes his guitar on the road and plays in hotel stairwells

("the best acoustics in the world," he says). His musical style could be called bluegrass with a splash of country.

"Queen of Roadhouse Rock" Eve Selis is another San Diego standout, beloved by local audiences. She has shared the stage with the Doobie Brothers, America, and Crosby Stills & Nash, and is popular in Europe as well as across the U.S. As a girl, she chose her future career when she heard Carly Simon singing "You're So Vain" on the radio. Her upbeat songs and soothing ballads dig deep into your very soul.

The Back to the Garden Band (named after a refrain in Joni Mitchell's song, "Woodstock") expresses that "History can be rewritten, but a song is forever," by taking audiences back through time with iconic songs. Invariably, their concerts become mass sing-alongs, set to the soundtrack of the free-love era. Consisting of musicians "Cactus" Jim Soldi, Sharon Whyte, Rick Nash, Larry Grano and Marc Twang, the band's motto is "Performed live and without a net....." They have backed Johnny Cash, Chuck Berry, Kenny Loggins, Chaka Khan, Art Neville and many more.

Berkley Hart is an acoustic duo made up of Jeff Berkley and Calman Hart. Fixtures on the folk circuit, they bring on the entertainment through natural down-home humor with poignant, delicate, masterfully-crafted lyrics delivered with stunning harmony and musicianship. They both, along with Eve Selis and Marc Twang, have won San Diego Music Awards over the years. They also have sold out past Poway Center concerts, titled "Oh Berkley, Where Hart Thou?" and "The Last Waltz."

The Poway Center for the Performing Arts Foundation is a 24 year old non-profit organization that offers professional performing arts events, including concerts, dance performances, theater productions, and a children's theatre series. The Foundation operates through a special partnership with the City of Poway and the Poway Unified School District.
