"Fever" is a great song with a fascinating history. It made the journey from R&B (Little Willie John) to mainstream pop (Peggy Lee) and then, surprisingly, into rock & roll (Elvis Presley). But, as audio and video excerpts show, the song's trajectory and history also make for a fascinating look at what the popular song is, what a standard is, and what the blues are-and how they all affect and interact with each other.

Will Friedwald writes about jazz and nightlife for The Wall Street Journal and is the author of A Biographical Guide to the Great Jazz and Pop Singers and Jazz Singing. He has written over 600 liner notes for CDs and received eight Grammy nominations.
