Dolan Turns Personal Song SUPERHERO Into Fight Song for Childhood Cancer Awareness

The artist reflects on the song's personal origins as it takes on a new mission.

What began as a song written for a family in need of hope is becoming something much bigger. Country-soul singer-songwriter Dolan has released 'Superhero,' a deeply personal piece inspired by dear friends and their young son as he underwent multiple rounds of chemotherapy. In recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, 100% of net proceeds from purchases of 'Superhero' through Bandcamp from Sept. 1–30 will be donated to Cook Children's Health Foundation's Erase Kid Cancer initiative to support childhood cancer research.

Available on Bandcamp for a minimum purchase of $2, with listeners given the option to contribute more, 'Superhero' serves as both a song of encouragement for families facing childhood cancer and an invitation for others to stand alongside them.

''Superhero' came from watching people we love walk through something no family should ever have to face,' says Dolan. 'You want to fix it. You want to take the fear and pain away, but sometimes you can't. What you can do is show up. You can remind them they aren't fighting alone. That's really what this song is about.'

Written by Andrew James Dolan and Robert Dale Alley, 'Superhero' captures cancer treatment through the intimate perspective of a parent reassuring a child at bedtime. Rather than ignoring the fear and uncertainty, the song finds courage in facing those moments together.

The verses move from a hospital room into a child's imaginative world, where treatment becomes a secret weapon, doctors and loved ones become teammates, and tomorrow's battle calls for a cape.

'You and me, we'll do our best to be brave / 'Cause you're my whole world / And this world needs saving,' Dolan sings before returning to the promise at the heart of the song: whatever tomorrow brings, no superhero has to face it alone.

For Dolan, a Fort Worth-based artist and adoptive father of four, that idea extends well beyond the song itself. Raised in West Tennessee singing gospel music in church, he blends the storytelling and relatability of country music with the emotion and soul of his gospel roots. His songs frequently draw from real life, including fatherhood, family, mental health, and his own unconventional path, with an emphasis on honesty and human connection.

With 'Superhero,' Dolan hopes that connection can translate into action. Throughout September, listeners are encouraged to become a 'sidekick' by purchasing the track, contributing more when possible, sharing it with someone who may need its message and encouraging others to join the effort.

'If this song makes you think of someone, send it to them,' he adds. 'If there's a child or a family in your life going through this, remind them that there are people standing beside them. And if you can give, give. Every little bit matters. Let's keep fighting for the fighters.'

While the campaign launches during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Dolan hopes 'Superhero' can continue bringing people together around children and families whose fight extends far beyond September.

'Superhero' was produced by Chris Sligh, who also contributed percussion, string arrangements, bass and keyboards. Dolan performs acoustic guitar, with mixing by Kevin Stokley and mastering by Sam Moses.

About Dolan

Dolan is a Fort Worth-based country-soul artist, songwriter and adoptive father of four whose music is rooted in real life and the stories that come with it. Raised in West Tennessee, he grew up singing gospel music in church, where he developed an early connection to music built as much on feeling and authenticity as performance. Drawing from his own experiences with fatherhood, mental health, adoption, and an unconventional love story, Dolan writes from a place of honesty, finding common ground in the complicated, deeply human moments that shape our lives. His music pairs the storytelling and relatability of country with the soul and emotional intensity of his gospel roots, creating songs that are distinctly personal while still leaving room for listeners to find pieces of their own stories within them. In a world that can often feel fast and manufactured, Dolan is interested in something simpler: real songs, real stories, and music that means something.
