Diana Krall Returns to the Hollywood Bowl, 8/24 & 25

By:

Jazz artist Diana Krall returns the Hollywood Bowl for the first time since 2009, for a weekend performing jazz standards and ballads, Friday, August 24, and Saturday, August 25, at 8 pm. The first half of the program features the Los Angeles Philharmonic, led by conductor Alan Broadbent, performing selections arranged and orchestrated by Broadbent – Charlie Parker’s My Little Suede Shoes, Lionel Bart’s Where is Love?, Broadbent’s The Children of Lima and MiLes Davis’ Milestones. The second half of the program features Krall with her quartet members Anthony Wilson, guitar, Karriem Riggins, drums, and Robert Hurst, bass, along with Broadbent and the LA Phil performing renditions of some of Krall’s own songs as well as other favorites.

Krall grew up in a music family, attended Berklee School of Music, then moved to Los Angeles, where she continued her studies with bassists Ray Brown and John Clayton, drummer Jeff Hamilton, and pianist Jimmy Rowles, who convinced her to focus on singing as well. In 1999, Krall signed to Verve and her career exploded with When I Look in Your Eyes, which won a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal and became the first jazz disc to be nominated for Album of the Year in 25 years. Her newest release, Glad Rag Doll, which includes songs from the 1920s and ’30s, is due out in October of this year.

Alan Broadbent has toured as musical director for Diana Krall and appears on her Live in Paris DVD. He has been nominated for Grammy awards twice for Best Instrumental Performance, in the company of such artists as Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins and Keith Jarrett. Whether working as a composer, arranger, conductor or pianist, he is widely respected and admired.
