We are thrilled to be kicking off an incredible year of programming with one of three of our own projects that are all emerging from The Theatre Centre's Residency Program this year.

"Three years ago, six companies came to us with a seed of an idea. We were in our POP UP location when the artists began their investigation, and together, we moved into 1115 where the resources of a fully equipped theatre came to bear. It is incredibly exciting to see these three works come to fruition, informed by each other's process, and the physical space they have been playing in." ~ Franco Boni, Artistic Director

Heidi Strauss (adelheid) - what it's like

adelheid's movement-based work looks at interaction between different people and groupings of people, with a specific interest in the situation of performance and how we consider each other (audience & performer) within that construct. Developed through Residency, what it's like uses brotherhood to consider personal, situational and systemic engagement. It walks the audience through a series of experiences, inviting questions about comfort, agency, complicity, and responsibility. How responsible are we for each other? How are we here, together?

what it's like will be co-produced by adelheid and The Theatre Centre in September, 2016. September 21-October 2, 2016 (Opens September 22nd).

Dan Watson & Christina Serra (Ahuri Theatre) - This is the Point

Dan and Christina are parents seeking a way for their disabled son to share his voice. Tony is a non-verbal adult with lots to say. Liz is his firecracker partner full of conviction. Through a series of staged conversations and theatrical re-enactments, these two couples draw from their personal lives to explore and debate questions of representation, the nature of companionship and how people of different abilities can connect with each other on equal terms.

This is the Point will be co-produced by Ahuri Theatre and The Theatre Centre in November, 2016. November 4-20, 2016 (Opens November 8th).

Jess Dobkin - The Magic Hour

Jess Dobkin is an internationally-renowned performance artist. In Residency, Jess has been developing The Magic Hour - a solo performance art work that uses magic as a medium to explore sexual violence, trauma and transformation. Using themes and devices of magic and ritual, from conventional entertainment to anarchic enchantments, the work challenges the boundaries of what is deemed public and private, hidden and revealed, to make visible what is not seen. She is collaborating on the project with Stephen Lawson and other artists.

The Magic Hour will be co-produced by Jess Dobkin and The Theatre Centre in January, 2017.
Full Dates TBA.

The Theatre Centre's Residency Program is a minimum two-year program designed to support artists in developing new work. The program is tailored to the specific needs of each participating artist or collective, and the artistic impulse or idea they wish to explore. The program facilitates a highly collaborative artistic process that embraces experimentation and learning with a wide variety of collaborators.

Artists Hannah Moscovitch, Maev Beaty, Tova Smith and Ann-Marie Kerr, Ian Kamau, and Suvendrini Lena continue the development of their works in Residency. Visit our website for more information on these projects as they develop.

Residency is made possible by Lead Sponsor BMO Financial Group, and with the support of The J.P.Bickell Foundation.

Introducing The Dance Card!

Sharp-edged. A treasure. Vigorous and intense. Redolent with disturbing beauty. Dynamo. These are some of the words which have been used to describe the work of eight celebrated dance companies which, by some happy coincidence, are all working in our West Queen West home at some point this year to present their work.

We are excited and honoured to host these renowned Canadian dance artists here at The Theatre Centre, where we have never before had occasion to present such a wealth, and such a range, of this form of live performance, despite our long history with the dance community.

In the spirit of The Theatre Centre, and together with our dance partners, adelheid, Public Recordings, K?mi Contemporary Dance Projects, Nova Dance, Peggy Baker Dance Projects, Compañía Carmen Romero, Kaeja d'Dance, and MOonhORsE, we are encouraging audiences to discover the work of an artist they may never have encountered.

Fill Your Dance Card!

Big believers in the notion that shared resources go further, we decided to partner with these amazing companies to create the Dance Card. Audiences will be invited to fill their Dance Cards with a 3 or 5-show package, with the revenues going back to each of the companies presenting and producing the work.

And in the spirit of adventure, the experience can be enhanced with our cheeky "Wild Card" option: audiences who choose to add an extra performance to their package will have a show chosen for them from one of the many other shows and happenings at The Theatre Centre this year.

The Theatre Centre and Dance Partners present The Dance Card. Head to www.theatrecentre.org for more information on our activities & programming. Visit the Dance Card page for more information on the individual dance companies involved, or click here for the full Dance Card program PDF. Call the Box Office at 416.538.0988 or visit us in person at The Theatre Centre, 1115 Queen Street West. Get your Dance Card now, and choose your Dance Partners throughout the year!
