EDINBURGH 2017: BWW Q&A- Cally Beaton

Tell us a bit about Super Cally Fragile Lipstick.

Super Cally Fragile Lipstick is about debunking the myth of the have-it-all 21st century woman. After over 2 decades combining big corporate day jobs with single parenthood and now comedy, life's glossy on the outside but sticky on the inside. The show looks at solving the conundrum of Super + Fragile and hoping that the answer = OK. The show looks at everything from ageing to bilingualism to sexuality to mental health to body image, with some graphs, pie charts and light science thrown in for luck.

Why bring it to Edinburgh?

Go big or go home! I'm not one of those 20 something comedians, with a 10 year strategy leading gradually to carefully crafted debut hour. If not now, then when...?

What sets it apart from other shows at the Fringe?

I first took to the stage as a stand-up aged 45, at the behest of Joan Rivers. This is a celebratory look at the duality of life through the eyes of someone the same age as many of the people who will come to see it (and a lot older than some others). It's an honest, funny look at life as a 40 something woman. And there are some surprise twists...

Who would you recommend comes to see you?

Anyone in a similar life phase (can't quite bear to say mid-life - oh, just did) and I've also had lovely feedback from pretty much all ages. I look at the phases of life from childhood to death (how cheering). It is a 16+ show. Someone brought their 11 year old son along to a preview, despite my warnings about some of the content, and I could see the years of therapy lining up ahead of him... at least he knows now where the clitoris is. Never too early to be told about that.

Are there any other shows you're hoping to catch in Edinburgh?

James Acaster, Desiree Burch, Sara Pascoe, Tez Ilyas to name but a few...
