Las Vegas Philharmonic Performs 2 Different Holiday Concerts, 12/2

The Las Vegas Philharmonic performs two different holiday programs on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM in Reynolds Hall at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts.

The matinee performance titled Home For The Holidays, features Anderson's A Christmas Festival, selections from Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker Suite, Strauss's Radetzky March and Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf. Special guest, Clint Holmes, will narrate the story of Peter and the Wolf. The music for this Russian folk tale was composed in 1936 and tells the tale about a rambunctious boy named Peter who attempts to catch a wolf in the nearby woods. Peter persuades hunters planning to shoot the wolf, to help him take the wolf to the zoo.

In addition to narrating Peter and the Wolf, Clint Holmes will sing a couple of holiday favorites with the Philharmonic. Holmes is a consummate entertainer, performer, recording artist, and one of the country's finest vocalists. Whether he is singing selections from the Great American Songbook, contemporary classics, or stirring original pieces, every performance is a one-of-a-kind mesmerizing and unforgettable experience. His new release titled "Rendezvous" is a star-studded jazz collective produced by eight-time GRAMMY winner Gregg Field.

The evening performance titled A Baroque Holiday: Handel's Messiah, features Manfredini's Concerto Grosso Opus 3, No. 12 "Christmas," Buxtehude's Das neugeborne Kindelein, Corelli's Concerto Grosso, Opus 6, No. 8 "Christmas" and Handel's Messiah, Part 1 with chorus-in-residence, the Las Vegas Master Singers. Music Director Donato Cabrera will host his pre-concert conversation at 6:30 PM in Reynolds Hall to discuss the music in the evening holiday program.

Buxtehude's Das neugeborne Kindelein and Handel's Messiah will feature four soloists including Katrina Galka (soprano), Zoie Reams (alto soprano), Joshua Dennis (tenor) and Efrain Solis (baritone). All the soloists except Reams have performed in Handel's Messiah for other music productions. Galka has performed with the Portland, Atlanta, and Dallas operas to name a few. Her roles have included Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Papagena in Die Zauberflöte, and Isabel in The Pirates of Penzance. Reams is a Studio Artist for the Houston Grand Opera. Her roles have included Flora in La Traviata, Rosalia in West Side Story, and Tituba in Ward's The Crucible. Reams was first place winner of the Emerging Artist division of the Classical Singer Competition (2015). Dennis has also performed in multiple roles and opera companies across the country including as Alfredo in La Traviata for the Seattle Opera, Opera Columbus and Opera Idaho; Roméo in Roméo et Juliette for the Minnesota Opera; and Tamino in Die Zauberflöte for the Michigan Opera Theatre. Solís is a recent graduate of the San Francisco Opera Adler Fellowship, where he sang Papageno in Die Zauberflöte, Dandini in La cenerentola, and Schaunard in La bohème.

Ticket Prices and Shuttle Bus Services

Single tickets include five price levels in Reynolds Hall:

PT Box = $109, A Seating = $105, B Seating = $70, C Seating = $50 and D Seating = $30

Tickets can be purchased online through lvphil.org or The Smith Center Box Office at 702.749.2000. The Las Vegas Philharmonic will offer a shuttle bus service to the 7:30 PM concert only from the Anthem Center at Independence Center in Henderson and the Starbright Theater in Summerlin. A roundtrip bus ticket costs $20 per concert and can be purchased in conjunction with the patron's concert tickets through the box office or online.

LAS VEGAS PHILHARMONIC'S TRADITIONAL HOLIDAY CELEBRATION returns with all the wonder and magic of the season. This festive, family-friendly concert begins with Leroy Anderson's nostalgic and popular A Christmas Fantasy, setting spirits alight. The merriment continues with selections from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's beloved Nutcracker. Sergei Prokofiev's timeless classic, Peter and the Wolf opens the second half with Clint Holmes narrating the elaborate tale. Johann Strauss's celebratory Radetzky March invites the audience to clap along. The spirited performance concludes with a traditional audience sing-along of holiday favorites accompanied by your symphony orchestra.

WE USHER IN THE SEASON with music from the Baroque era. Francesco Manfredini's Christmas Concerto opens the program, setting the seasonal mood. An Italian composer, violinist and church musician, he demonstrated a gift for easy melodic invention. Dieterich Buxtehude was a Danish-German organist whose works are frequently performed in church services. Das neugeborne Kindelein (newborn infant child), taken from a collection of sacred poetry circa 1558, celebrates the newborn Jesus and the coming of a new church. Arcangelo Corelli's Christmas Concerto was published in 1714 and bears the inscription Fatto per la notte di Natale (made for the night of Christmas). It is one of the most often performed pieces of classical music ever composed for the holiday season. We conclude the musical feast with our Chorus-In-Residence, the Las Vegas Master Singers, joining the orchestra for Part One of George Frideric Handel's uplifting and transcendent Messiah, a hallmark of holiday choral works.
