Concert Artists Guild to Present Brasil Guitar Duo, Enso String Quartet at Carnegie Hall

Concert Artists Guild has announced a special program featuring CAG alumni artists the Brasil Guitar Duo, members of the Enso String Quartet, Christina Jennings, flute, and Tanya Bannister, piano, in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at 7:30pm.

The program features Mozart's Flute Quartet in C Major, Fauré's Piano Quartet No. 1, and original works for guitar duo and flute by the members of the Brasil Guitar Duo, João Luiz and Douglas Lora.

A 2006 winner of the Concert Artists Guild Competition, the Brasil Guitar Duo has been hailed by Classical Guitar magazine for its "maturity of musicianship and technical virtuosity." Its innovative programming features a seamless blend of traditional and Brazilian works. Duo members João Luiz and Douglas Lora met in São Paulo as teenage guitar students and have been performing together for twenty years, including on major concert series and at festivals in Cuba, Germany, England, South Korea, Colombia, and Brazil. The Duo's 2015 recording of Leo Brouwer's complete works for two guitars for Naxos, featuring Sonata de Los Viajeros, was nominated for a Latin Grammy award for Best New Composition.

One of this generation's most compelling string quartets, the Grammy-nominated Enso String Quartet has risen to the front ranks of chamber music ensembles. Founded at Yale University in 1999, the Quartet has been described by Strad magazine as "thrilling," and praised by the Washington Post for its "glorious sonorities." The Quartet has won numerous awards, including top prizes at the 2003 Concert Artists Guild Competition and the Banff International String Quartet Competition. International tours this season take the Quartet to Colombia, Brazil, and a 25-city, 30-concert tour of Australia and New Zealand. In the words of Classical Voice, the Quartet is "one of the eminent string quartets of our era."

Flutist Christina Jennings is praised for her virtuoso technique, rich tone, and command of a wide range of literature from Bach to Zwilich. The Houston Press declared "Jennings has got what it takes: a distinctive voice, charisma, and a pyrotechnic style that works magic on the ears." A winner of the Concert Artists Guild Competition in 2001, she has appeared with over fifty orchestras, including the Utah and Houston Symphonies. In great demand as a teacher, Ms. Jennings is Associate Professor of Flute at the University of Colorado Boulder, and on the summer faculties of Greenwood Music Camp and ARIA.

Lauded by the Washington Post for playing "...with intelligence, poetry and proportion," pianist Tanya Bannister's victories at the 2003 Concert Artists Guild Competition and the New Orleans International Piano Competition confirm her status among the leading pianists of her generation. Receiving further distinction as an "Artist to Watch" on the cover of SYMPHONY Magazine, Ms. Bannister's career has already brought her to many of the world's great concert halls, with recitals at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Tokyo's Nikkei Hall, London's Queen Elizabeth and Wigmore Halls, The Kennedy Center in Washington DC, and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall.

Since 1951, Concert Artists Guild has helped more than 500 young musicians launch concert careers. Winners of CAG's annual competition receive comprehensive management support, including a debut recital in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, concert bookings, opportunities through the CAG Commissioning Program and CAG Records label, marketing, publicity, and mentorship. Notable alumni artists include violinists Ani Kavafian and Jennifer Koh, soprano Martina Arroyo, pianist Barry Douglas, clarinetists David Krakauer and David Shifrin, flutists Carol Wincenc and Marina Piccinini, Imani Winds, Grammy-winning ensembles Pacifica and Parker String Quartets and the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, and MacArthur Fellows Claire Chase and Eighth Blackbird.
