Beachwood High School to Celebrate Opening of Auditorium with Concert by The Cleveland Orchestra

By:

On Saturday evening, November 5, 2016, The Cleveland Orchestra will join with Beachwood High School to dedicate the school's newly renovated auditorium and celebrate the school system's outstanding music education programs. This concert is made possible by the Alfred Lerner In-School Performance Fund, created through a gift to The Cleveland Orchestra's endowment by Mrs. NorMa Lerner and the Lerner Foundation. Tickets for the free concert will be available on the Beachwood Schools website at www.beachwoodschools.org/clevelandorchestra.aspx.

The evening begins at 7:00 p.m. with members of the Beachwood High School Orchestra, Band, and Chorus performing as part of a music education showcase. Immediately following the student showcase, The Cleveland Orchestra will take the stage to perform a concert that will include Beethoven's Overture to The Consecration of the House, his Leonore Overture No. 3, and more. The concert will conclude with a "side-by-side" performance of an excerpt from Ravel's Bolero, for which The Cleveland Orchestra will be joined by Beachwood student musicians. A post-concert dessert reception will follow the concert.

Prior to the November 5 concert, Cleveland Orchestra musicians, many of whom live in Beachwood, will participate in masterclasses and coachings with Beachwood school music ensembles. Additionally, Cleveland Orchestra Associate Conductor Brett Mitchell will rehearse with the Beachwood High School Orchestra conducted by Lisa Goldman and the Beachwood High School Band conducted by David Luddington.

Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus Director Lisa Wong will lead several workshops with the Beachwood High School Choir conducted by Mrs. Darlene Haight.

This special evening is designed to showcase both organizations' commitment to music education.

"There is no better way to thank the community for their continued support of the Beachwood Schools than inviting them to join us as the world-famous Cleveland Orchestra performs on our stage," said Dr. Robert P. Hardis, Superintendent of Beachwood Schools.

"As an alumna of Beachwood High School (Class of '74, the year the original auditorium opened), I am exceedingly proud of Beachwood's music education programs, and of the new, state-of-the-art performance space that has been created," said Joan Katz, Cleveland Orchestra Director of Education and Community Programs. "We are delighted that Beachwood Schools not only value but have invested in the future of the arts for students in their community."

This summer, construction was completed on Beachwood High School's renovated, state-of-the-art auditorium facility in which musical, dramatic, and other performances and programming for the entire Beachwood Schools community will take place. Renowned architects Westlake Reed Leskosky worked with Beachwood school officials to create an innovative design for the auditorium that repurposes the original 1974 facility and completely transforms the experience for both performers and the audience.

Cleveland Orchestra Lerner In-School Performance Program (ISP)

The history of The Cleveland Orchestra and Cleveland's schools are inextricably linked. Before Severance Hall was built, the Orchestra played in many different venues, including several high schools in and around Cleveland. During the 2009-10 season, The Cleveland Orchestra, led by Music Director Franz Welser-Möst, returned to its roots by taking the entire Orchestra "back to school" for the first time in 40 years. Since then, thousands of school children, including some of the area's most disadvantaged, have experienced The Cleveland Orchestra in their school auditorium or gymnasium. Schools that have been a part of the ISP program include John Hay High School, James Ford Rhodes High School, John Adams High School, St. Ignatius High School, Cleveland School of the Arts, Shaker Heights High School, Lakewood High School, Memorial School, Mound Elementary School, Saint Joseph Academy, and Patrick Henry School in Glenville. The ISP program is supported by the Alfred Lerner In-School Performance Fund, which permanently endows Cleveland Orchestra performances in area high schools. The fund was established by Mrs. NorMa Lerner and the Lerner Foundation.
