Bechdel Project Opens ROO Residency Applications

Bechdel Project is opening its Room of One's Own (ROO) Residency for 2024.

This one-year residency empowers feminist writers of all intersections to develop bold, innovative work for the stage or screen that amplifies untold stories of women. Inspired by Virginia Woolf's seminal work, "A Room of One's Own," the ROO provides a space and comprehensive support for a chosen writer to delve into their artistic vision.

The 2024/25 residency offers:

  • Financial Support: $5,000 in artist funds to fuel the creative process.

  • A 3 Week Residency Option from September 1st - 22nd at Bechdel Project HQ (Includes housing & unlimited studio time)

  • An Artistic Home: Access to the Bechdel Project's vibrant spaces in Brooklyn and Germany for writing, workshops, and readings.

  • Curated Mentorship: Tailored guidance from the Bechdel Project team, including dramaturgy, producing, and logistical support.

  • Community Connection: Opportunities to engage with a network of feminist artists and creators.

  • Public Platform: A culminating public reading of the developed work at Bechdel Project.

We are particularly seeking applications from global-majority writers whose work:

  • Centers on women (living or historical), highlighting untold, underrepresented, narratives and perspectives.

  • Challenges existing power structures and gender norms.

  • Embraces diverse viewpoints and intersections of identity within feminism.

  • Pushes the boundaries of form and genre in theatrical and screen storytelling.

"I am thrilled that we get to continue supporting the creation of innovative works, investing in emerging talents, and creating inclusive spaces for artistic expression through our ROO Residency program," says Maria Aparo, Co-Creative Director at Bechdel Project. "By providing platforms, resources, and support, we strive to nurture the voices that are often silenced through systemic oppression and amplify their stories that will redefine the cultural landscape of tomorrow."

Applications open on March 1st, 2024, and will be accepted through March 15th. For more information about the ROO Residency and the application process, please visit our website at https://www.bechdelproject.org/home/development/roo.

Join us in celebrating Women's History Month by amplifying the voices of tomorrow's feminist storytellers!

About the Bechdel Project

The Bechdel Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing feminist storytelling in theater and film. We champion a more inclusive and equitable creative landscape where women's voices and perspectives are at the center of the narrative. Through artist development programs, public events, and advocacy initiatives, we empower artists to create bold, challenging work that redefines the stories we tell and who gets to tell them. Bechdel Project's programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
