NSMT Holds Spotlight Awards for High School Students, May 15

The North Shore Music Theatre Spotlight Awards, honoring area high school students for achieving the highest levels of excellence in musical theater, will be presented on Monday, May 15th at 6 PM.

A complete list of nominees as well as the top ten schools will be announced on Monday, May 8th.

"It is North Shore Music Theatre's privilege to produce this very special program culmination in an exciting night to honor the achievements Musical Theater on the local high school level," explained Burgess Clark, NSMT's Director of Education. "Having spent this school year seeing one remarkable musical after another, our panel of judges will have some very tough choices to make."

The ceremony includes the presentation of 15 Spotlight Awards, as well as musical numbers from the top ten high schools and a grand finale number with two students from each of the twenty-three participating schools.

The high schools that submitted shows for consideration are: Acton Boxborough Regional High School, Andover High School, Beverly High School, Bishop Fenwick High School, Brookline High School, Governor Dummer Academy, Groton School, Holliston High School, Ipswich High School, Leominster High School, Medfield High School, Medford High School, Needham High School, Newton Country Day High School, North Reading High School, Pingree School, Pope John XXIII High School, Randolph High School, Reading Memorial High School, Salem High School, Shrewsbury High School, Sparhawk School, and Watertown High School.

"North Shore Music Theatre's award-winning theatre arts and education programs and youth performances annually reach over 90,000 students. The Theatre's Youth Performance Academy attracts thousands of students from 4 – 18 years old who are interested in exploring the world of music, theatre and dance and honing their craft. In 2005, NSMT's Youth Performance Academy received the Junior Theater Festival's Outstanding Achievement in Musical Performance Award and the Outstanding Achievement in Choreography Award for its performance of Disney's Cinderella Kids. NSMT has become the model for schools and organizations around the country and is one of the region's leading providers of theatre arts and education programs," state press notes.

Doors open at 5:30pm for the 6pm ceremony. The North Shore Music Theatre Spotlight Awards are black tie optional.
