Can you tell us what you've already seen, if anything? And do you prefer musicals over plays, or either?
I would definitely suggest "In the Heights" if you haven't seen it already. I have not seen "Rock of Ages," but a lot of people (and critics) loved it. Ditto for "God of Carnage".

How about something Off-Broadway? So many people start "what should I see" threads and Off-Broadway shows get ignored.

Well, I'm a musical theatre major, but that's all I've ever seen on broadway. I REALLY wanted to see August Osage County and even got tickets for August 20th, but now that it's closing I can't. Off Broadway is great too! I'm just wanting to see a variety of shows that isn't Wicked and something all of the fangirls are attracted to.

I think every show has their own "fangirls". I don't think you are free of them anywhere.

Off-Broadway there's Altar Boyz, Marvelous Wonderettes, and Toxic Avenger for fun. Ruined is more serious. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is playing at St. Bart's. The Fantastiks and South Pacific are good fare for a musical theatre major. YOu could, also, hit Shakespeare in the Park.

Also, I'm trying to keep it cheap. What is the Marvelous Wonderettes and Ruined about?

A high school prom set in the 50's with songs from the era such as Mr. Sandman, Lollipop, etc. This show is so much fun. I've seen it more than once.

Ruined is a pulitzer-prize winning play about a whorehouse in the Congo. Much more serious fare.

Most of the shows have discounts available though http://www.broadwaybox.com

Might I suggest Blithe Spirit? I was thoroughly entertained, and how many chances will you get to see Angela Lansbury. And, in my opinion Susan Louise O'Connor as Edith was absolutely hilarious!

will you be there after the 14th? I know the Fringe Festival starts then and I know that tickets (I believe) are 15 bucks, but there is this new musical called VOTE! that is going to be in it... you can check out the demo/promo's on their website. Here is Allison Case singing a song from it (my fav from the show) called Paper Planes.

Oh, I had no idea it closes in July. What a shame. Ummmm... when does God of Carnage close? Another GREAT play. I would also suggest West Side Story. Sure, the current revival has some problems, but I still had a great night at the theatre.

WSS is another good suggestion. While the current revival is quite flawed when when will be on Broadway again? Another nearly 30 years?

The only downfall is that, with its popularity, there are no discount codes. You could try to rush but I imagine it wouldn't be easy.

I would still like to see a straight play. I'm thinking possibly 39 steps? Any Review? Yay, nay?

At that point in August, The 39 Steps might be the only straight play open on Broadway... unless my logic is off

I don't thin 39 Steps can even last that long. There numbers are about as weak as August's have been.

Off Bway
Toxic Avenger
Altar Boyz
FUERZA BRUTA (a personal favoirte of mine -- different than anything else you are likely to see.)
Ruined (have heard AMAZING Things.)

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Wicked wasn't mentioned because Joe said "I'm just wanting to see a variety of shows that isn't Wicked and something all of the fangirls are attracted to".

When I visit NYC I buy advance tickets to the shows I MUST see (like you have) and then take my chances at TKTS for the rest of the visit. I've loved so many shows that I never would have seen otherwise.

Most people will disagree with me, but Shrek is really good. Brian D'arcy James's performance is not to be missed... In the Heights and Next to Normal are a must, but 9 to 5? It's ok... Shrek is better... Plus, you must go eat a John's Pizzeria... Its located in a beautiful chapel, and ITS DELICIOUS!

Thank you all for the help, I'm going to try TKTS but I'd still like to see a straight show. What is Ruined about? And I'm wanting to see 9 to 5 because of Megan Hilty, She's a good friend of a good friend. Anywho.

Again, Ruined takes place in a whorehouse in the Congo. They have no official site for me to link you to.
