Yup, as TGMAG winds down, it's time for another one of my world-famous brackets. This time we're refocusing the attention from the men and women of the theater world to the songs. Here's how it's going to work to determine the greatest Broadway opening number of all time -

Each time you copy and paste the list above you, you can add one new opening number (in the format: "Song Name" from Show Title) and add a point to two songs. Each song must be the first song of the show, and must have been part of a show that ran on Broadway.

So when we start with:

"The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" from Sweeney Todd - 1
"Tradition" from Fiddler on the Roof - 1
"Everybody's Got the Right" from Assassins - 1

You can do:

"The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" from Sweeney Todd - 2
"Tradition" from Fiddler on the Roof - 1
"Everybody's Got the Right" from Assassins - 2
"In the Heights" from In the Heights - 1

When a song gets 5 votes, please put it at the top of the list and add "- DO NOT VOTE" to the end of it. Obviously, do not vote after a song gets 5 votes. You can't subtract votes. Voting will end at 7:00 AM EST next Monday.

Let's start with:

"The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" from Sweeney Todd - 1
"Tradition" from Fiddler on the Roof - 1
"Everybody's Got the Right" from Assassins - 1

I think this should just go to I Hope I Get It from A Chorus Line.

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

It's Today is not Mame's opening number.

"St. Bridget" (sung by Agnes) is the opening number.

I'd like to add "All That Jazz" from Chicago and "The Circle of Life" from The Lion King to the list.

Thanks

Could we please stop it with all of these brackets? They were fun at first, but now they're getting a little much, and are clogging up the board.

I doubt it. One thing is that they come one after the other, but they are not the same song.

I'm deleting It's Today, since it's not the opening number. Also, the name of Ragtime's opening number is Prologue: Ragtime, so I will fix that as well.
