I posted this on the Student board, but since I feel this one gets more views I decided to post it here as well with hopes that someone will have an answer.

Thanks!

-------------------------------------------------------

Hi all,

After studying at a top Musical Theatre Conservatory I left and have decided to apply and audition for Juilliard's Acting Program (which I did not do while in HS) to see what would happen.

Last time around, I wore a nice pair of Khaki pants and a button down shirt (very dress casual, in between normal school wear and going to see a Bway show wear, haha) and I found it very successful. However, I am really not sure what to wear to my Juilliard audition. (IMPORTANT: I am male)

I originally was planning on wearing a very nice pair of jeans with a tucked in nice button down shirt (slightly fancier than my past outfits because I did feel a little underdressed at the MT auditions). But, on the audition requirements page it says "Applicants are asked to wear comfortable clothing that permits freedom of movement." To me that sounds like jazz pants or breakaways with a T-Shirt or Polo... but I can't imagine that is what people wear to their Juilliard auditions.

So, preferably from someone who goes/went to Juilliard or at least from anyone who auditioned or knows what people actually wear, what are your thoughts? Jeans and button down (dressier or more casual?), or almost dance class-like clothes... What do most guys wear?

Thanks for your answers...

I did not go to Juilliard, but I would wear some nice linen slacks, which usually have drawstring closures and a fine gauge wool v-neck sweater. That's comparable to khakis and a button down in formality and definitely less constrictive than jeans.

Just a suggestion.

You could also bring along some more movement-friendly options. That way you could lessen any potential worries.

Something classy but not TOO dressed up or weird. No jazz pants or anything like that, just something comfortable that looks nice.

I could tell you what to wear if you were auditioning for music, but clearly that doesn't help you.

I know that theater may be, and usually is, more casual when it comes to appropriate dress for auditions. However, Juilliard being what it is, I often find that you can never dress too much, as long as it's not crazy. If you walk in wearing a crappy pair of jeans and a rolled up button-down shirt, they might think that you don't care about the audition, or what you're doing.

I think you're best off wearing a nice pair of khakis or slacks, or some sort of black pants and a nice shirt or sweater.

As a former drama student, who worked the auditions for the four years I was there - the faculty is looking to create an ensemble. They are looking to see "who you are". Dress comfortably. The audition starts (or did years ago, anyway) with a group movement warm-up. If you're comfortable in sweats and then want to change, go with that. If you're more comfortable and can do basic movement in jeans, go with that. Look nice and put together, but make sure you're representing yourself. I've seen people come in suits, jeans and tees, dance pants. Be yourself.

I went to NYU Tisch - I'd say wear something that you feel comfortable in - that you like the way you look in.

And bring along a pair of jazz pants for when they randomly say "ok, now we're goingt to do the movement portion" lol

I auditioned for Juilliard on Saturday. Some guys were dressed in jeans and a t-shirt, others wore a suit. Some wore khakis, some wore jeans and button down shirts.

I'm a girl but I wore nice black pants, and a shirt with a little sweater over it.

Just wear whatever you'd feel comfortable doing the warm up in.
