Hollywood Actors vs Broadway Actors

or do they think theyre better than them it kinda seems like that cause ive never really heard any star give credit to them.

broadway is deffinetly harder work..and in my opinion you have to be more talented

This is a rather silly question, considering how often performers do both. They may be on different coasts, but it's not as if once you choose one, you're locked into it for the rest of your life.

yeah i know but there are some actors

such as all those disney kids and tom cruise, lindsay lohan, and all those celebs who probably wouldnt ever do stagework

There is no financial incentive, though. Someone like Tom Cruise can make $25 million per movie (God only knows why, but that's another discussion for another day). Stage work might give him a different type of credibility as an actor, but he has no tangible incentive to do something that would cause him to take a massive pay cut and possibly take him away from an opportunity that could make him tens of millions of dollars.

Or, some people who do film work just don't want to do stage work. I'm sure there are also people who do stage work who have no interest in film work.

I agree with you CSon. Live stage is much harder work. I can see where movie acting might be a strain on actors because of the takes and the waiting around but the camera and the film editor does a lot of the work for them. A stage actor is pretty much out there on their own.

yeah, and also for all the edited pop music out there..they have nothing on what it takes to belt out live 8 shows a week

Ah, it's all different and yet all the same. There are stage actors who can't adapt to film work, and vice versa. Many singers don't translate well on recordings either. Not that I'm saying all recording artists or film actors are talented, but there are different skills and techniques required. Not to mention the different marketing and media and salaries. I'm sure many Broadway actors don't mind that they still have some form of anonymity. Either way, I'd like to think the respect is mutual. A good performer is a good performer, no matter what medium.

Yes, I think Hollywood actors respect Broadway actors. Many B list Hollywood actors make their way to the boards in order to revive flagging careers and to be given more credibility as a "serious" actor. Even A listers like Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington are lured to Broadway. Even for unknowns, casting directors in LA still pay attention to NY credits.

Things have changed--20 years ago classically trained actors would be embarrassed to do a TV show...now that some of the best writers are going to Hollywood that stigma is no longer there...it's increasingly difficult to create a sustained career doing just theatre...still, the myth that the best actors are in NY is still pervasive.

Though it happens less and less, there are still many established and rising Hollywood actors who were first discovered working in NY Theatre: Alison Pill, Jason Butler Harner, Dan Fogler, to name a few.

I think it is insane for someone to say one is harder than the other. I can rattle of a list of Broadway actors who are not convincing on screen and a list of Hollywood actors who are not convincing on stage. It's a diffrent beast. I believe actors appreciate good actors no matter what.

Alison Pill has been doing tv and films since she was 12 years old. Although she's done a lot of theatre in the past five years, it wasn't responsible for her being 'discovered'.

i think it really depends on what kind of work they are doing in each...for example: are they in hollywood because they are interested in taking their craft to film, or because they were "discovered" walking down the street and were stopped to do modeling and then they decide to become an actress? very few "actress/models" are talented, IMO. I think that, besides that scenario, most hollywood actors and broadway actors are equally talented.
