"i thought it was an amazing point when Whoppi brought up the fact that her own mother couldn't vote in the US, and that Elizabeth was not living in the same US as Whoppi was."
This was very disingenuous. Whoopi is only one of thirteen people that have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony. There are not two worlds. A black person can rise to the highest positions in the same way a white person can.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

This was very disingenuous. The fact that these are "milestones" for an entire race should tell you something about the country we live in.

Wow, Goth. Thanks for reassuring some of us that it's smooth sailing for Obama going into the home stretch. Politics notwithstanding, it's good to know that he faces no barriers to winning over the electorate.
none other than his barely concealed contempt for the electorate, his radically leftist positions on the issues and his history of corruption...and that harridan wife of his.

It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”

Whoopi's point wasn't about African Americans not being able to have success. She was pointing out, to dumb as a rock Elisabeth, that the world she lives in as a while woman is different than that of Whoopi's as a black woman. There will always be different standards, whether we want it or not. She was simply saying that Elisabeth's idea of "a perfect world full of love and harmony" is far from a reality.
And yest Borstal, if you enjoy that song you'll get Haselbacked.
In other EXCITING Elisabeth news! From Jezebel.com:
So this explains a lot: Elisabeth Hasselbeck has never used a vibrator, and she won't be starting anytime soon. This morning on The View, the ladies were discussing something that they've talked about a million times before: whether or not your man jerking off to porn — or jerking off at all — is a deal breaker. (It's insane to think that people would hold masturbation against someone.) Elisabeth said she's not OK with it, because it makes her feel as though, if a man has to go to fantasize about anything but her, then that means she's not good enough. Jeez, for someone who's not into masturbation, she's sure as sh*t into herself. Anyway, Whoopi asked if she ever used a vibrator, and Elisabeth said no, because she enjoys sharing intimacy with another person.

Can you imagine not masturbating? I mean, seriously...the ladies on the board, holla for me please?

abowlerhat- name 10 other black people in the same calibre as Whoopi, Oprah, and Obama. I have to disagree with you though- there is still a race problem in the US. I just saw a story on the news last night where a black woman was run over by a white man who then got out of his car and yelled racial slurs at her. Yes, the black community has come a long way but I don't hear a fat lady singing. Do you live in the north or south because down here in the south- I see more prejudice. Just sayin'
Elisabeth has a thing about appliances, Borstal. She once said gay marriage was the same thing as someone being able to marry a toaster or a dog. Updated On: 7/18/08 at 03:22 PM
Well, for her sake, I hope her husband has the best dick in the world! But judging by her 'tude, my guess is no.

I think you are really kidding yourself if you think this country does not have a race problem. Even in NYC, the lines are seperated by neighborhood! Only racist white people would say that black people "pull the race card too much".
The only time I have ever heard a black friend of mine "pull the race card" was in an instance in which she was questioning herself for thinking that way!
As a feminine man who is judged daily on how I present myself to the world, I can only care to think you would deem America's problem with homosexuality too!
Are you a sockpuppet, abowlerhat2? Or just blind? Updated On: 7/18/08 at 03:34 PM

I could understand both whoopi and elisabeth's povs.
What confounds me is how and why some Latinos in NYC think it's ok to use the word with each other. Is it the same as when white boys use it trying to be wannabe rapper types or is it a reclaiming of the word even though it wasn't the word used against their ethnicity?
And why was it ok for Tarantino to use it in Pulp Fiction (a film I love)?
I don't like the word. I think it represents hate, but I understand the concept of reclaiming a word and giving it less power.
I understand the concept of taking back the word to reduce the negativity as well, however I will say that as a minority myself I don't want a word like faggot back, but that's beside the point.
I just don't agree with the "I can say it, but you can't" mentality, which I find to be very hypocritical and another example of why the "divide and conquer" keeps separating people and setting back humanity a few decades. Because if you want to reduce the negativity of a word that's meant something to you and has been distorted thoughout history, why bring further separation into the picture, limiting yourself to just the minority?
You want more respect and less negavitity? Don't divide and conquer. Of course some people could learn the meaning of the word respect for starters then we could work our way through.
I don't WANT to live in what they call "a certain way." In the first place I'd be no good at it and besides that I don't want to be identified with any one class of people. I want to live every whichway, among all kinds---and know them---and understand them---and love them---THAT's what I want! - Philip Barry (Holiday)
It really isn't "I can say it, but you can't." It's a matter of how it's said and most whites don't understand that. Most whites (like EH) don't understand (or refuse to acknowledge) the weight and nuances it carries when used, either within the black community or toward the black community by another.
Really the whole approach used in the View's discussion was wrong. A better discussion would have been possible if Whoopi or Sheri had been asked how they felt about the manner in which Jesse Jackson used it toward the black community, because he pissed off a lot of blacks with that.
The good Reverends Sharpton & Jackson have brought playing the race card to a high art. Jesse extorts money from business in the name of equality. Old Al came into this late in the game but is making up for lost time. Tawana Brawley,Imus & Freddy's Fashion Mart are but a few examples.
Instead of taking up the mantle of Cosby & Obama (to his credit) of personal responsibility, Al never addresses the problem of black on black crime in the ghettos. He takes easy targets but where he could do a lot of good he is the invisible man. He just plays the race card to get maximum exposure for himself & line his own pocket.
Jesse has a little bit of envy re Obama . Jackson is tired & old & is the past. It is hard for him to deal with this reality.
the race problem is something made-up by morons like sharpton. blame whitey for everything is his motto. whitey lynched us. whitey enslaved us. whitey denies us rights. whitey whitey whitey. it gets so boring an so old. I never lynched, denied rights, enslaved anyone. but i get treated like i did. sharpton and his kind keep the race fires burning to tap our government of money so he can doll it out to the lazy welfare mothers to buy rap music and make more babies to join gangs. WAKE UP PEOPLE!
