I LOVE this show! Saw a colege production in the 80's that was amazing. Later on, some friends were in a production (I auditioned, but was cast in another show and became unavailable) who said that the Rosamund refused to do the nude scene unless the Jamie was nude somewhere in the show too, so after "Love Stolen," she jumped up and pulled off his clothes - full frontal! Quite a gasp from the bluehairs in the audience.

Also, I'm pretty sure Original Cast Records offered a 4-song EP of the show with just Patti and Kevin ... similar to their EP of THE BAKER'S WIFE with Patti and Paul Sorvino.

the only music i've heard from this show is on amazon.com, where you can play clips. i'm not sure if this is patti's version though, does anyone know?

also, what is the character of Salome like? is it usually played like an older cratchety woman?

A lady I know who was in the original Acting Company was Patti's understudy in this show. She never went on until one day Patti was soooo sick she was going to have to. She rehearsed all afternoon, including, nervously, the famous nude scene where she had to make sure the wig hit all the right places, and was finally set to go on when, at the last possible moment, Patti lurched in, "insisting" that she was fine and could do the show.

My friend never did go on in the role. Patti's understudies NEVER went on, at least in those days.

I came across this today.

Salome is nasty character actress type. Basic Wicked stepmother. Kaye Ballard is Salome in the Showtime version; she was 55 at the time.

There is a recording of LuPone and Kline in it, though its pretty rare. It took me ages to find it, but that's all I'm sayin'.

Edited for clarification.

There was a vinyl EP that Lupone/Kline did of a few songs back in the day - it was NOT a bootleg.

If anyone has this EP (or has heard of it), they need to message me right this minute. I've never heard anything of it before now.

I saw this. I don't remember a great deal about it, though I have a memory of LuPone naked but covering parts of her self with her hair and perhaps her hands.

What I mostly remember is that Mary Lou Rosato stole the show.

Mary Lou Rosato played Salome in that production.

Mea culpa! I found the EP from Original Cast Records (originalcastrecords.com) ... but not with Kline/LuPone!

With Jerry Orbach and Virginia Vestoff!!

The B/W picture looks like Kevin, no doubt...but the color one...? Does not look like him, but maybe is that 80's hair re: Kline/LuPone Robber Bridegroom

Lupone was certainly very pretty...it's a shame that people let themsleves go;I feel she could look just as pretty, now (not that she's THAT unattractive now, but very changed).

Is this possibly going for revival...?

I say, kudos to LuPone for (apparently) not choosing to have herself cosmetically altered in an attempt to still resemble her more youthful self. THAT'S true beauty.

Let herself go? She is still fairly slim, and doesn't show significant sun damage. Robber Bridegroom was 33 yrs ago. THIRTY THREE YEARS. No one looks like their mid-twenties 33 yrs later

and I'd love to hear Jerry Orbach's take on Jamie Lockhart.

starting to look as if every macho 70s-era leading man wanted a crack at this score. Kline, Bostwick, Orbach - anyone else recorded the role?

"starting to look as if every macho 70s-era leading man wanted a crack at this score. Kline, Bostwick, Gortner, Orbach - anyone else recorded the role?"

Well, Kline was a little-known member of the Acting Company at the time so it's not as if he was top Broadway leading man saying, "Oh, I gotta sing this role." And Marjoe Gortner? Did anyone consider him an important leading man in any medium?

Anyway, I know you didn't describe them as being the most popular leading men of the era, but I don't think people were running after the chance to do this show. If any important leading man had been dying to star in it, it might not have ended up at the Acting Company. It was only after that production got good reviews that it managed to get a commercial production with Barry Bostwick in the lead. And Bostwick was not a huge draw at the time. If he had been, it might have run longer than four months.

Re Bostwick, my friend from the Acting Company of that era has only ever had great things to say about him, as an actor and as a person. He was very popular despite the fact that he'd been brought in from outside because, as you say, Kline had no name recognition.

Oh, I'm not saying he wasn't good and he was a moderate name. But I wouldn't say that at the time he had great drawing power with audiences.

I didn't say important or well-known, I said "macho". It was a 70s thing.

In fact, I think I shall become a sock puppet called "BelongsInThe70s"
