A local theater is doing a production of Into the Woods, and the audition requirements are a song and a monologue.
I'm singing a slightly shorter version of "No More", doing some of the Mysterious Man parts, but I can't find a monologue for this particular audition. Any ideas?
I'd try something from OUR TOWN or even maybe make GIANTS IN THE SKY into a momolouge. I am gathering from the fact you are doing Mysterious Man parts that you are indeed a gentleman
Brek-a-leg INTO THE WOODS is one of my favorite shows ever. Have fun!!!

Unless the audition asks for you to sing a song from the show you're auditioning for I would pick a different song. And as for a monologue there are lots and lots you can use, try doing something from a different James Lapine book(Sunday in the Park with George, Passion) there are lots of choices, just do some research.

As someone who has sat on both sides of the audition desk, I have to say that you are much better off singing a song that you are absolutely connected to physically and vocally rather than worrying about having the song fit the show perfectly. Sing something not too legit that you have down pat. And I can't emphasize enough the physical part. I've seen countless actors with beautiful voices do the most awkward/unnatural things with their hands/arms/bodies during a song.
If the audience could do better, they'd be up here on stage and I'd be out there watching them. - Ethel Merman
Yes, Eponine. I am a gentleman. =) I'm auditioning for the Baker though, not the Mysterious Man. I meant some of his parts of "No More" so that I could sing the song without just singing the Baker's sections. Sorry, should have made myself clearer.
However, from what people have said on here, I'm thinking about changing my song to something more audition-appropriate. I've been feeling that "No More" might come across somewhat choppy and short if it is just me anyway.
What about "Johanna"? Sondheim piece, and it keeps options open casting-wise. because I would love to be any character in the show (especially the Baker, Jack, or one of the Princes). They are all so rich.
Thank you for all the help! Updated On: 5/15/08 at 05:10 PM
I'm familiar with the rule; I was just debating whether I should make an exception this time. However, upon further thought, I think I will be changing my song. Thanks. Any other help would be appreciated...
... And I would LOVE to play the Baker's Wife someday One of my all-time favorite roles.
Again break-a-leg

If you're in a big area, they will hear Johanna several times.
If you have the time, the song that always got me cast was "Tchiakowsky" (I know I Mis-spelled that), from Lady in the Dark. However, it's a beast to get through, so my other standby was "Gethsemane"
