Successful child star, successful transition to adult stardom, movies, recording artist, concerts, substance abuse issues, psychiatric issues & institutionalized, poorly received live appearances, multiple marriages, child custody drama, "mama" issues .....

Discuss.

"successful transition to adult stardom, movies, recording artist"
...am I just not reading it correctly? Do I need reading lessons?

Yes, apparently you do. Notice the placement of the comma.

I don't think being tabloid fodder, actually counts as a transition to adult stardom. In other words...she doesn't even come close to Garland, in talent, or success. But, if this generation wants to claim her...they can have her.

I didn't say anything about talent or level of success, but like it or not, Britney is (was) successful.

Britney's very brief success in no way rivals that of Judy Garland. One can't describe Garland without a mention of incredible talent. One can't describe Britney without the mention of the extreme lack thereof.

I can't make that comparison but I've got to admit that when I read about her being taken away this last time that I had visions of Frances Farmer. Most of you are far too young to remember her but a few might have seen the film "Frances" with Jessica Lange. I've been among the first who've criticized this girl repeatedly but this time it all seemed to hit a nerve and I felt very, very sad for her.

I assume you're talking about Judy. Frances was never more than a mediocre actress who led a very sad life.

One can be successful without having talent. Again, I am not asking you to compare Spear's talent, or lack thereof, with Garland's. There is no comparison. But you can't argue that Spears wasn't successful.

She might be this generation's Joey Heatherton or Pia Zadora

Mamie, if that question was to me, I was referring to Judy as the one with talent.

If we're just talking about success...

Judy Garland was a star of radio, film, television and concerts for almost 40 years before she died at 47.

Britney Spears has been a "star" for 15 years.

Bring up this thread in another quarter century, and we'll see if they compare.

For what it's worth, Brit's "singing" "voice" does sound like the Mayor of Munchkinland's, so there's that connection.
