Director Delbert Mann Dead at 87#1

I didn't see anything posted about this, but I thought it worth mentioning and discussing.

Mann was a pioneering television director, and an Oscar winner for "Marty" (Best Picture, 1955). He was also born in my home town of Lawrence, Kansas.

He has quite a legacy of films too.

"Desire Under the Elms" (1957), "Separate Tables" (1958 ), "Middle of the Night" (1959), "The Dark at the Top of the Stairs" (1960), "The Outsider" (1961), "That Touch of Mink" (1962), "A Gathering of Eagles" (1963), "Dear Heart" (1964), "Fitzwilly" (1967), "Kidnapped" (1971), "Night Crossing" (1982) and "Bronte" (1983).

No one cares.

And that's a damn shame.

"Separate Tables" is a great film with wonderful comments by the director on the DVD [especially his hatred of Burt Lancaster].

I haven't listened to his commentary on that, but now I'll have to!

And "Marty" is such a perfect, small film. It may be THE perfect small film. The scenes with Ernest Borgnine and Betsy Blair are movie magic at its finest.

For those of you who've seen "Marty" before, here's a little reminder of just how good it is.

But I'm giving you a SPOILER ALERT if you haven't seen it.

This is the end of the movie:

I do believe CBC told me that someone made a musical out of MARTY once.

Mr. Mann (oh, how funny!) made some excellent serious films, but as a child I watched THAT TOUCH OF MINK every time it was on TV. Cary Grant and Doris Day...how can you go wrong? (Cary was sooo dreamy in that movie, and he was no spring chicken!)
