I believe in getting right down to it, so here’s my question for the day:

Recently, we’ve had people taken to task for their perceived anti-Muslim stance (and I say ‘perceived’ because interpretation of the posters’ intent could be up for debate.) But I know from experience (and not a fair amount of personal participation) that other religious groups have received negative attention – particularly Christianity, and Catholicism in particular.

So, I want to know WHY the perceived ‘anti-Muslim’ stance has resulted in censure and such virulent dissent on this board?

Many times, anti-Christian statements are made, which end up leading to very vocal – yet allowed – discussion. WHY then, is the impression of anti-Muslim sentiment viewed as something different? When the anti-Christian (or indeed, anti-religion in general) posts are made, it can lead to some passionate discourse – which is allowed to stay. And yet, the perceived anti-Muslim stance is enough to get things deleted. WHY?!?!?

Quite honestly, this difference in approach and response is eerily similar to what we see happen around the world. Either you agree with the dogma – or at least allow it without question – or the response is censure, up to and including the threat of violence (even death.)

I'm thinking there's two reasons. One, a couple of people complained (and complained and complained) about the posts and had them deleted. Two, some Muslims have gotten the reputation of not taking kindly to criticism of their sect in the past and shown another side of Islam: "The Religion of Peace," and the powers that be might not have wanted to take the chance on leaving posts up that might invite that particular brand of "peace."

Religion and peace seem to be inherently contradictory concepts to me.

I can imagine how you would get that impression, but for most mainline religious people, that couldn't be farther from the truth.

I'm not a historian, but haven't many wars been caused by religion?

Many wars have been fought in the name of religion, but if you look deep enough into it, they were political. (the right to divorce, land holdings, etc)

That's a completely unfounded statement, and too much of a generalization to apply to all religions.

On the positive side, although I'm not religious, I do understand that their faith helps many people get through life (and death).

I'm spiritual in my heart and I connect with God, or whatever it is out there, but it seems to me that the rules involved with being a good_______ fill in the blank of a religion require too much exclusion and damnation of others.

Most religions have some form of hierarchical power structures which, by their very definition, makes them political.

Most, but a lot don't

Did you know that modern congregationalists (one of the largest protestant sects) are completely autonomous? Each church is a body on it's own, free from the rules of the denomination. The Congregationalists, in history, were responsible for....oh, I don't know, the founding of our nation.

Fen,

So what you're saying is that the Congregationalists, who founded our country and established the principles of our democracy, are unpolitical?
