I know there was a similar thread recently but I'm just wondering how many straight plays are on Broadway at the moment and how many musicals. I'm not including off-broadway because I'm wondering about plays that are more mainstream.

Also do they attract huge audiences like musicals ? Are ticket prices the same ?

And as I am am a dramatic actor -cant sing or dance what are the opportunities like in NY?

At the moment? There are NO straight plays. re: Straight Plays v Musicals

There are usually much fewer, but this is absurd.

No, unless they've got big names in them, they don't draw nearly the same kind of crowds.

And yes, the ticket prices are usually the same.

Yikes! It must be next to impossible to survive as a dramatic actor in NY .

On Broadway I'd say it's pretty hard. But there are usually lots of off-Broadway things.

Here are five portraits from today's Times Arts & Leisure section of some very good, working NY actors (some of whom have survived being dramatic actors in this city for decades) and the financial realities what it means to be a professional stage actor in NYC. It ain't easy:

Thanks a lot Margo that was very interesting. Here it is the opposite there are a majority of straight plays wheras musical theatre is a completely foreign concept.
