Not that I've ever seen. But, it is dangerous if you type on instant messenger all the time and then switch to writing a paper and spelling things like "u" for "you" and all that. That's why it's just better to type with proper spelling and grammar ALL the time. It's just easier and you'll get a better grade on your paper. And everyone at BWW will like you more.
lol Yeah. I get irritated when people use terms like, 'wats ^' 'hbu' and other abbreviations. (Excluding 'lol' haha) For uncapitalizationed lettering, it doesn't bug me so much because I do it every now and again when I have to rush and such. That is just my opinion.

There was a teacher at my school this past year who wanted the students to write an essay about their lives, or something like that and the teacher allowed them to use slang like "OMG" and stuff like that..although the funny part was although she said they could, I guess it was some kind of test because she marked a lot of students down for using that type of slang..
My teacher told us last year that we can only use that language when quoting a computer conversation. Otherwise, I know of absolutely no teacher who would ever allow that.
I mean, Denzel Washington? Gun to my head..of course.
Well... I'm in school. And I don't type like that, though I'm probably the only person I know who doesn't. Fortunately, my language arts teacher is fairly strict about people not using chatspeak, bad grammar, unnecessary abbreviations, etc.
If I ever turned in a paper written in that sort of a style, I doubt that I'd get a passing grade on it.
Grown-ups never understand anything for themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them.

I can make any kind of assignement imaginable and my students absolutely refuse to do them. They become downright hostile when I try to get work out of them.
People say "it's the internet, it doesn't matter!". Which is a fair enough viewpoint, I suppose. But if I see someone who types like an idiot, I can only assume that they are an idiot. Personally, if people are going to think I'm an idiot, I'd rather it be because of what I say rather than how I say it. It's also easier for people to understand what I say if, y'know, I say it in coherent English.
Well, I know one thing... I'm not going to worry about whether "my" subject is "BROADWAY" enough to post on this board anymore. So, THANKS! People "post" what they're "thinking". I just say give them a break! If you can READ it - be thankful! LOL
lol drives me nuts. I'd wager that 98% of the time it's used, the person isn't really laughing out loud, or even thinking what'a said is even funny. It's been so watered down with overuse that most of the time people use it they just mean, "Don't take this too seriously" or "yeah, that's mildly amusing."
As to using it off line, I don't see web slang in other students' papers. But I do see it in official emails at work all the time.
