Would this be appropriate?#1

One of my co-workers passed away quite suddenly last week. I worked with this person regularly, so I am both shocked and sad to say the least. I would like to send a card to his family. Since they do not know me personally, would it be inappropriate to write a small note inside the card identifying myself as one of the man's co-workers? I was thinking of saying "I worked with (name) at (company)...our workplace was better for having him in it, and I have fond memories of his smile, sense of humor and friendship. My thoughts are with you during this difficult time." or something along those lines.

I want them to know that their family member touched the lives of many, and will be missed far and wide. I just didn't know if it was appropriate to do so, since they do not know me personally. What do you think?

I should point out that HR did provide the family's address to the staff so that we may send our own condolences as we deem individually appropriate. I believe the company is sending something as well.

I think it's perfectly fine and that the family would appreciate it.
Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be enbered with your old nonsense. ~ Emerson

Perfect!
No good can possibly come from using this vast wasteland of error and deliberate deceit. You should get off of it and warn others away. You should make sure your children and grandchildren know what a corrupt and morally bankrupt institution it truly is.

It sounds both appropriate and thoughtful.

I think it would be a very nice, appropriate gesture.

I'm sure they'd appreciate any good thoughts. If you have a specific story to share (a good deed the coworker did, a funny story, something in particular he helped you with) even better.

Many times people don't get to see the "work side" of their loved ones and happy memories from strangers can really show them how much of an impact they had in the world.

Your approach is so tasteful and thoughtful.

Just curious...

Why would you think that it wouldn't be appropriate?

I would be very touched if my family member passed away and I recieved a note like that from one of their coworkers. Very well written, and I am so sorry for your loss.

I agree. It would probably mean more to the family than you will ever know. It is never inappropriate to send condolences to anyone. And coming from someone that they don't even know will be even more meaningful that you went out of your way to express your feelings.
PEACE.

Thanks all. The only reason I thought it might be inappropriate - or maybe more awkward than inappropriate - is that I sort of needed to "introduce" myself. Just seemed a little odd, considering the circumstances. But since I cannot attend the services (which are across the country), I wanted to at least send a card.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone.
