There must have been 2 dogs who were born blind, because I believe there was a tan chihuahua mix closer to the 45th st section of Shubert Ally.

Did anyone see that husky type dog just passed out beneath the handler's feet? It was around 3:30 when I passed through. So cute. Just sleeping away as people walked right by its nose.

Well, I'm glad he got away with it.

People should stop having children and just adopt dogs. We'd all be a much happier bunch.

The blind dog was so adorable, the site of him almost made me cry.

Elphie, yes, I do remember one of the presenters mentioning that all of the featured dogs were adopted. That was wonderful to hear.

I don't understand why they were showcasing already adopted dogs.

I kept asking about dogs I found adorable and they would say that applications for their respective adoption centers are available.

Its so damn hard to find/adopt a dog! I mean honestly...

Because the event started at 3:30 not 5:30. The idea of those 1st two hours is to pair up animals with adopters and get those adoptions processed. The "show" is already written and goes on at the conclusion of the event when hopefully most of the animals having apps down on them.

I was there at 3:50pm after the matinee of The Drowsy Chaperone.

I believe I didn't mention being there only for the show anywhere in my posts...

*sigh* I want a dog. but it's a $300 pet fee at my apartment. That black lab pup is a dream.

ps, I miss beefy Cheyenne with muscles in more places than just the arms and thighs. That skinny trim look is weird looking.

re: Broadway Barks today

I too am confused about people saying all the dogs were announced as adopted... considering my roommate and I put in an application on that fluffy red dog and were told we'd have to wait a few days to hear whether we could have him because they did not do same-day adoptions.

Raúl did present, very close to the end. And there was the blind puppy, and a dog who, for some reason or another, had to have his eyes removed. (I believe he had been blind previously, for a while at least.)

I had a good time at the event, even though I did not get there until 5:30. I had wanted to go to the event for...at least seven years, and this is the first summer I have been here and able to go! Very exciting. It was awfully hot, though. I felt like I was going to pass out the entire time, despite chugging water.

I was bowled over by the Great Dane puppies. They're my favorite. And the ones that Cheyenne and Kerry Butler had were too cute for words.

Ok- here is the deal with the way things work at Broadway Barks as there appears to be a bit of confusion here. The shelters/rescue groups are asked to bring up to 6 animals in need of homes. They do not always bring 6 but they do bring animals that need homes. They do NOT bring animals that are already adopted. During the course of the day however, the animals may have a number of people beginning the adoption process by filling out applications. Often times multiple applications are taken for a single dog or cat because there is no guarantee that every applicant will be approved to adopt. The rescue groups screen prospective owners very carefully. On occasion a dog/cat may be brought to the event that has a very likely adoption in progress- but they are brought to the event to be seen - just in case that application falls through.
I know for a fact that 2 of the dogs that was onstage with you Logan, were NOT already adopted, In fact I had spoken with that group and asked if they had gotten applications. Tess, the pit mix had not.
Almost NO adoptions are completed the day of the event. It is veryr are for someone to go home with an animal that day. Again these groups want to evaluate all applicants as thoroughly as they can to give the animals their best shot at a good" forever "home.
Might many of the dogs/cats have gotten inquiries/applications? Let's hope so. Did they all? I doubt it as it hasn't happened at a Broadway Barks yet. But for sure not every animal that was at the event Sat was adopted already.

Awww, that dog in the picture with Beth Leavel is the one I was talking about. What a sweet, playful little guy. I would have gladly taken him home.

Your "really cool friend"? BillFinn, how sweet. And regarding your bww name, I apologise for what I said while we were browsing the stacks at Colony.

Broadway Barks was a lot of fun. I am a dog lover, as well as a lover of Broadway, but had never actually attended this event before. I was so happy that I did. Two of my friends adopted kittens, though sadly I'm not in a position where I can adopt a dog. But I'm so happy that so many of them found happy homes.

You know it and you want it... you just can't believe you've got it.

AStack, Thanks for clarifying all of that. I volunteer for the ASPCA and work in Adoptions. Though I didn't work at Broadway Barks. But yes, we have an adoption process that everyone must go through which includes references that must be called, proof of employment, etc. And even if the apps checks out, if we don't feel the dog or cat and the adoptee are a good match, we'll stop the adoption. The idea is to make a good match to assure a good life for the pet and to also assure as much as we can that the animal won't be returned to us which is very hard emotionally and mentally on the animal.

I only stayed for a short while at the beginning of the program but I do remember the announcement from the woman from the NYCAC&C announcing that all of their animals had been adopted. And I'm sure she just meant they all had several applications on them so adoption was pretty assured. Was this the announcement that everyone is referring to as announcing all the animals at Broadway Barks were adopted because she was only talking about her shelter. Or maybe an announcement was made later that I wasn't there for.

And logan: my apologies. I didn't mean to sound snippy but I see now that my post definitely came across that way. Though I'll also tell you for the future that often the shelters are set up before 3:30 and if they have interested adopters, they'll start the paperwork. Good luck on finding your dog!

My experience was most of the people toting the dogs with "adopt me" signs were saying "this dog has already found a home."

Thus my confusion.

I am a staunch supporter (lol) of adoption, and I absolutely understand the screening process as to avoid a reoccurence of abuse they may have already sustained, but going through and applying for many of the adoption agencies oline was taxing! I hate to say it, but its almost a factor that most likely turns most people to purchasing a dog.

Its especially difficult while trying to adopt in the city. I'm interested in a smaller dog, have a vast array of breeds and mixes I'm interested in but find myself having to skip many applications for one small reason or another.

The agencies must know that not everyone in NYC has a yard, but I live in walking distance to many parks and plan to "wee-wee pad" train (for a smaller dog) as well as have access to my roof-deck.

Oh well. I may have to just try some area pounds, even though my experience in the 100's was not wonderful as they only had pit-bull and the like there.
