I don't think anyone posted this, but I found this on imdb's Sweeney Todd board.

http://www.mtv.com/overdrive/?vid=114854&partnersearch=yahoo.video

I love how Burton refers to Sweeney as The Sound of Music with lots of blood.

Really?

Well, I guess "The Exorcist" is "Mary Poppins" only with a priest instead of a nanny.

How very prolific.

Oh come on now. It's an MTV interveiw, what is he gonna say?

"Sweeney Todd was the precurser to such dark and dramatic musicals as Marie Christine."

It seems as if he's approaching the project with great reverence.

I'm not prejudiced or anything, but all musicals look alike.

Sorry.

Well, don't they?

I mean, COME ON!

Aw, I was just playing. I'm actually not against the project. Honestly, I quite look forward to it.

It's better to have a real original like Burton putting this together thrn just about any other high profile director working today. The guy is visionary and wildly creative in an environment that stiflingly conventional. I bet Sondheim is thrilled.

I got the impression he just wasn't interested in talking about it... at least he didn't give some fake pretentious interview.

I agree he probably could have made it sound better than that though. He seemed a little tentative to talk about Depp's singing, I'm disappointed. I wanted him to dish :P

Oh well. At least now we know that Tim Burton is a little bonkers. Not that we didn't always expect so.

Way to draw in the MTV crowd...with a reference to Sound of Music. Even *I* would run screaming. And I love Broadway shows...

directors aren't paid to create coherent sentences. they're hired to create magnificant movies.

now i'm just as nervous as the rest you . but no one has seen any footage or anything. so just chillax until you see the film. THAN you can take it apart

Tim Burton knows what he's doing-- he has a long history of not liking to show his hand and seemed to be deliberately evasive. If there is anyone in film today that has the vision it takes to develop a proper version of Sweeney Todd he is the only name I could come up with--

but the question I *need* to know (and unless I am missing is-- nobody seems ot be asking is) will Danny Elfman be participating at all in the scoring of the film? He has done every single Burton film since Beetlejuice...
would be really mind-blowing to not see his name somewhere in the credits........

He didn't seem to want to be there or giving that interview. Who does want to give with MTV these days? *Threadjack* Jake Gyllenhaal was on TRL the other day (and he mentioned seeing Spring Awakening) and he clearly didn't want to be there, at all. *end threadjack*

Is this interview on MTV as well as part of their news breaks or just MTV.com?

well in any case, I start having shudders when MTV is interested in a musical... do they know it's not Dreamgirls? Did anyone tell them there were no sparkies and beehive hairdos? Lord help us all. Burton, after Planet Of The Apes, Big Fish, Charlie and Corpse Bride, this is your last chance with me.

"He doesn't really seem to like giving interviews, does he?"

You don't see that many interviews with him. I found an other one on You Tube of him promoting Nightmare in 3D. He seems to do more like the behind the scenes of his movies kind of interview than a flat out, guest on Leno.

I wanna say that this was late last year, around the time of Nightmare 3D.

"The man can't put together a coherent sentence and he is directing Sweeney? OMG."

He may not be able to talk right or coherently, but he can make a great film. Besides, he's been attached to direct Sweeney since the early 90s, but had to drop out, but then he was abler to come back. It's almost as if, Sondheim wanted Burton to direct it, like he was Sondheim's first choice for director.
