I hate to say it, but Sarah Rice was one of the most lackluster performers in the original production of SWEENEY TODD. Her Johanna was bland and her diction was absolutely dreadful. Honestly, I couldn't understand a word she spoke or sang. As I saw the show several times in previews, I had to wait a considerable amount of time until the OBC was released and the lyrics were printed in the booklet.
In my mind it wasn't until Betsy Jocelyn took over the role that the character bloomed.
You are entitled to your opinion, but many others feel quite differently regarding Ms. Rice's beautifully sung and acted performance in Sweeney Todd.
I'm not going to fight with you over your very personal opinion, even though I --and many others -- don't agree with it.
I have heard Ms Rice sing in recent years and her diction is now impeccible and she is in glorious voice. She is also a moving and funny actress.
I have been lucky enough to have seen a couple of these Merkin Hall concerts with her and the other performers last year and they are thrilling evenings. I got tickets through TheatreMania's site once and TDF the other. She and the other performers are terrific.
The response of the audience was electric. I was really glad I was there. My partner and I felt exhilarated by the high caliber of performances.
So, Dollypop, stay home, because you need to hold on to your negative opinion of this very wonderful performer.
