Why am I not surprised Magruder that you have answerd this puzzler correctly?
GYPSY indeed was nominated in 8 categories when it first graced the boards. It lost everyone at the 14th annual TONYS presented in 1960.
The 4 musical acting nods went to: Mary Martin, THE SOUND OF MUSIC Patricia Neway, THE SOUND OF MUSIC Tom Bosley, FIORELLO! (No GYPSY nomination for Best Actor in a Musical)
Musical Director: George Abbot, FIORELLO! Musical Director-Conductor: Frederick Dvonch, THE SOUND OF MUSIC Scenic Designer-Musical: Oliver Smith, THE SOUND OF MUSIC Costumes, Musical: Cecil Beaton, SARATOGA Best Musical: a tie. THE SOUND OF MUSIC and FIORELLO!
The first TONY associated to GYPSY did not occur until 1975 when Angela Lansbury was recognized for her performance as Mama Rose in that Broadway revival. Tyne Daly won in 1990 in the same category for her portrayal of the stage mother of all stage mothers. The Weissler's won that same year for producing the year's best revival.
That's it 3 TONYS for this classic American musical.
I can't help but compare this random group of nominated musicals to the groups of recent TONY memory. I shudder at associating the term "excellence in theatre" with the latter groups. Oh well.
Bulldog, I was thinking of THE FULL MONTY which was nominated for 10 in 2001. The record set that year was of course the most-ever wins by THE PRODUCERS.
"Do you know ChrisLovesShows?" "Yes. Why, yes he does!"
