Which hotels are the best in the Time Square/Broadway area? I've stayed at the Edison, the Mayfair, and Hotel 41 At Times Square. I usually stay at the Edison because it's centrally located, but I'd like a little variety on my next two outings. Is there another hotel in that area that I could try?

The Time Hotel is nice. Very contemporary. Steps from Times Square. The Skyline is a few blocks away, inexpensive and very nice.

I like the New Yorker. It is right across from Madison Square Garden and I think it is pretty cheap. They have small rooms but are you there for the room or there for the city?

Thanks for the suggestions. I definitely want to try a new hotel. The Edison is fine, but I'd like a little variety.

Does anyone have suggestions on what I can do from ten o'clock to three in the afternoon while I'm in New York? I've visited museums during that time, but they are often so crowded that you can't see much. Are there museums that are off the beaten track? Are there any museums devoted to theatre/Broadway?

I've read that you can view videotapes of Broadway productions at the The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. Can you just show up and view these tapes or do you have go through some registration process and/or have a reason for viewing a tape of a production?

I adore going to New York, but I don't know it well enough to occupy my time during the late morning and early afternoon hours. I'd like to keep the shopping down to a minimum.

omg i dunno how any one can like the New Yorker. i stayed there once and i didnt like it one bit. The rooms actually remind me of a bad horror movie. and the accomidations are horrible. Now the New York Marriott Marquis is the best hotel! the accomidations are awesome and if you are lucky enough to get a room with a time square view it is the best! i must admitt that the elevators suck there but they are working on it!!! aiite ~pc~

I usually stay at the Edison too, my home away from home, and I love the coffee shop and piano bar, but I just saw a show on the travel network with Samantha Brown gushing about The Time which is nearby, and it looks really great! And for just a few bucks more. Very quirky, if you're into color scemes, it looks like fun.

Speaking of hotels, I was dragged to a wedding in Carmel, Indiana (5-6 hours away) and I am sitting in the "Business Room" on the high-speed internet. It is a suite, so they ususally have a lot of business stuff. I will be home Sunday.

Stayed @ the Time in May & I was ok cos I got it @ a GREAT price but the usual rates are a bit pricey restaurant & bar also. Great if u are seeing NINE , it's right next door. I've said this before but the NYC & CO (NY Tourist board) organizes special rates for winter & summer specials. The next list will be up in Nov that may be too late for U.

As far as things to do durig the day; I personally love spending an afternoon checking out the art galleries and funky shopd in SoHo and the Village. The galleries are a nice alternative to the sometimes crowded museums

When I've come to NY for a visit of a few days, I've stayed at the Milford Plaza on 8th Avenue between 44th and 45th. Now I usually stay for two weeks or more and I sublet an apartment in the West Village using Craigslist.com to search for one. It costs less and I have a kitchen for light meals, saving even more money.

Thanks for the great info about the list of apts...

But I must say that for something outside the district... Chealea Savoy is fun for those of us who like to theater and party. Very well located.

I stayed at the Courtyard by Marriot, and it was really nice! We had this huge room with a nice view....really really nice

I also stayed at the Plaza, which was amazing. It was so gorgeous inside the hotel, and the room was very nice! I had a great view of FAO Schwartz LOL that was when I was about 10 and loved that store, well I still love that store, but ya know what I mean...

What about the Milford Plaza? It's 3 star and right in Times Square on 45th and 8th, only $80 a night if you book through hotels.com. Rooms aren't HUGE but who stays in their room when they're in NY? I usually stay at the Milford when I'm there one one or two night trips for auditions or dance or voice or something where I know I only need the room to shower and sleep...for actual lenghty stays in the city where I like to sit in the room and relax sometimes, I like the Marriot Marquis, the Plaza (when I'm in the mood to spend the $$) and this hotel up on 50-something...blanking on it right now...

NYC tourism must be way up, because the prices for hotel rooms sure are. I'll be staying at The Edison next month, I booked it months ago at $159 a night, and just last March and April I paid $99 and $119 respectively. The Ed is now booked for my nights so I think I got a good deal. These days it's hard to find anything around Times Square for under $200. A couple of years ago (soon after 9/11) I got The Millenium for $149, and now it's almost $300. I usually use hotels.com and sometimes expedia.com, and I shop around. Maybe next time I'll take my chances with Priceline.com.

Last April I stayed at the Sheraton New Yorker...which was great. A few blocks up from Times Square...it was nice to get out of that craziness. Only a short walk to Rock Center, 5th, and the Park. Really nice, big room too. I'd stay there again in a heartbeat.
