I have to agree. I usually like Idina's voice, but she sounded awful.

Other than some of the clips and Hal Prince's brilliant story about CATS, the doc didn't tell me (and many of us) anything we didn't know.

It needed to be another six hours at least.

'I for one am happy to at least know that a good Documentary has been done and there some things in it that a lot of people, who think that Broadway began with RENT, can learn. '

Not sure if I'm included in the mentioned group of people, but I would like to say that I do not think Broadway started with Rent. It didn't even start the string of rock-oriented musicals. For the record, that documentary didn't tell me much about the older musicals that I didn't already know, and I really hate it when people assume that anyone that likes Rent or Wicked or whatever they like that it automatically means they know absolutely nothing about musical theatre. Everyone was talking about the Rent section because the thread happens to be titled 'Rent on the Broadway Documentary'. Sorry I don't mean to sound mad I just wanted to set that straight re: Rent on the Broadway documentary Updated On: 10/22/04 at 05:26 PM

Broadway really began with THE CIVIL WAR.

My reference to RENT was only based on a time period. I could have said CATS or PHANTOM but RENT was the fist show to come to mind. I am a fan of RENT and my post was not a dig at anyone who loves the show. I just find that there are people on this Board who do think that Broadway started in the 80s or 90s so if people don't focus on only the stuff that they know then they get pissed. There is lot more Broadway History out there and the fact that you knew a lot about it does not mean that a number of others did which is something that is easy to tell by reading some of the things in this thread and throughout this Board. So again, just to let you know, it was not a shot at you or any other rentheads out there.

NoDay, you Rent fangirl you. re: Rent on the Broadway documentary

I agree totally with what you're saying Pab. I admit I'm fairly ignorant as to Broadway pre-1980s (with the exception of Tommy and JCS), more from a lack of resources here than a lack of interest. Thank god for this mini-series though. The history of Broadway is hugely fascinating!

re: Rent on the Broadway documentary I do what I can...

Haha I really don't think anyone takes my opinions on Rent related issues seriously anymore... I really try not to sound too obsessive/defensive! Really I do! Sorry to anyone whose posts I jumped all over... When it comes to Rent I sort of just say what I'm thinking before realizing how annoying I must sound to other posters... Thanks everyone for putting up with me re: Rent on the Broadway documentary

Hun, you're not nearly as annoying as some of the newer poster on Compulsive Bowlers. Talk about crazed fan girls. Oy. (Do you go on there?)

I haven't watched all of the series yet - is most of the footage from the Lincoln Centre archive or some other form?

I love Sondheim to death but I think he got way too much time. I mean really, 5 minutes on "Sunday in the Park with George"?? The thing I liked best about the whole special was the segment on "Chorus Line"-I had no idea how the whole show was conceived before...that and the most adorable old woman who understudied some part in ziegfeld follies a long time ago doing her old tap dance. Aboslutely adorable...a lot of the rest of it I could have done without and um I actually went and did other stuff during most of it.

I used to. Now it's basically over run with girls saying '_____ is so hot' and 'Wait who is this Jonathan Larson you speak of?' the site crashes every other minute, plus I found BWW re: Rent on the Broadway documentary I lurk there every once and a while to see if maybe its canged at all but no such luck yet...

re: Sondheim.

Did anyone miss Rocco Landesman's assertion that Stephen Sondheim IS the history of musical theatre??

He was NOT given enough time. But neither was Bennett, Fosse, DeMille, Kander and Ebb, Frank Loesser, et al.

Fact is...too much ground to cover in 6 hours.
