.....It's My Fair Lady, after all, so there's plenty of gorgeous tunes to hum along with and there's lots of fun performances, too. Lenny Wolpe's Doolittle gets all the intended laughs and Patricia Fraser's a shimmeringly funny Mrs. Higgins. Glory Crampton begins her turn as Eliza with a Cockney accent via Peachtree, Alabama, but as the evening goes on, she grows strongly into the role; her transformation is breathtaking and nicely infused with an interior, smoldering fire. And Charles Shaughnessy is a thoroughly enjoyable Higgins; his ability to play raging tyrant and wide-eyed innocent boy, at the same time, is truly delightful. But the evening's real powerhouse is Max von Essen as Freddy Eynsford-Hill; it's a sopping wet dishrag of a part so it's endlessly fascinating to watch von Essen make so much theatrical magic with it.
Wow, that's high praise. Freddy IS such a blah persona, it must be an entirely different show with Max in it. Good for him! I would love to see him in a show soon, but won't be travelling for a while.
I know he is doing Joseph in LA in August, so he must not be in line for any Broadway appearances this season. At least not the Fall crop. He deserves another lead role soon, though.
