1969 What the Butler Saw stands exposed at the Queen's Theatre in London. Joe Orton's black comedy stars Ralph Richardson and Coral Browne. It will run 101 performances.

1978 Carol Channing reprises the role of Mrs. Dolly Gallagher Levi which she originated in 1964 in a revival of Hello, Dolly! at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. She will reprise the role once again at the same theatre 17 years later.

1989 Hizzoner!, starring Tony Lo Bianco as New York mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia, closes faster than burlesque. After opening Feb. 24, Paul Shyre's monodrama runs only 12 performances.

1991 At the Westside Arts Theatre Off Broadway, some budding talent will emerge at the opening of And the World Goes 'Round, a musical revue featuring the songs of John Kander and Fred Ebb. The production was conceived by Scott Ellis (The Rainmaker1999 revival), Susan Stroman (Contact) and David Thompson (adapter for the 1996 revival of Chicago) and starred Bob Cuccioli (Broadway's Jekyll & Hyde), Karen Mason (Sunset Boulevard and cabaret fame) and Karen Ziemba (Contact).

1917 - The first jazz recording for Victor Records was released. The Original Dixieland ‘Jass’ Band performed on the tune The Dixie Jass Band One Step. The word ‘Jass’ was later changed to ‘Jazz’.

On this day in 1922, Phoebe Anne Oakley Mozee broke all existing records for women’s trap shooting. She smashed 98 out of 100 clay targets thrown at 16 yards while at a match at the Pinehurst Gun Club in North Carolina. She hit the first fifty, missed the 51st, then the 67th.

1933 The Nazi Party won 44 percent of the vote in German parliamentary elections, enabling it to join with the Nationalists to gain a slender majority in the Reichstag.

1953 Soviet dictator Josef Stalin died at age 73 after 29 years in power.

1963 Country music singer Patsy Cline was killed in the crash of a private plane near Camden, Tenn.

1974 Actor Billy DeWolfe, 67, dies in Los Angeles. A longtime vaudeville performer, he toured with his own act, DeWolfe and Kindler. In 1954 he appeared in John Murray Anderson's Almanac.

1982 Comedian John Belushi was found dead of a drug overdose in Hollywood at age 33.
