After Sunset Jamie is reimagining Phantom.

Will be a radical departure from Prince production.

Oh god no! Please tell me this is a joke!

The idea is to work and to experiment. Some things will be creatively successful, some things will succeed at the box office, and some things will only - which is the biggest only - teach you things that see the future. And they're probably as valuable as any of your successes. -Harold Prince

Christine will be completely nude to represent her vulnerability and the Phantom will now wear a mask that’s painted to look like Raoul’s face to represent the two men in her life. And he’ll also be nude.

Exactly. This thread was started by the same person who immediately posted that the Sunset producers were shopping for a Broadway theatre the day after first previews in London.

EVERYONE will be masked throughout, except during "Masquerade."

In all honesty, I am having a hard time imagining what a drastically different version of PHANTOM would look like … or what could possibly be gained from stripping it down to bare bones.

There's another rumor floating out there that the project will be a Sondheim show. A Cappella Assassins.

I believe I heard the recent Chichester “Assassins” is going to be having a West End run.

Can Phantom work stripped down though? I feel like the story is strong enough to sustain it. I do want a darker version to show up sometime in near future which more deeply explores how much of a groomer / assaulter Phantom was and not just "troubled" soul. I always feel like the ending kinda gives him a hero spin, despite everything else he did preceding it.

What did the Phantom do to groom or assault Christine?

If you can't see the pretty explicit grooming in his dialogue, that "Music of the Night" dims out with her passed out in his bed while he looks on at her isn't exactly subtle in what it's implying.

ALW toned down a lot of the Phantom's nastiness from the book for the show, but the characterization of the Phantom as a controlling, obsessive abuser is still there.

They are two adults. Can you name a specific line in MOTN that is "grooming" and not romance? And she fainted and he covered her with a blanket, rather than touching her. And the lights dim with the Phantom looking out into the house, not with her staring at Christine. That would be kind of creepy.

What's really dangerous here is throwing around words like grooming and sexual assault. These are serious, life-changing crimes and trying to make the Phantom a rapist or a predator does quite a disservice to SA victims and survivors. This is going into boy-who-cried-wolf territory and pretty soon SA victims will be doubted even more than they already are because we are so sloppy about using the terms.

Isn’t she stated as being 17 in the original source material?

"

"Sing once again with me / our strange duet / my power over you / grows stronger yet / and through you turn from me / to glance behind / the Phantom of the opera is there / inside your mind"

not exactly subtle.

Her age is not explicitly stated in the novel. One translation did state her age as 15, but that was a mistranslation of a phrase describing her voice as “pure as that of a 15 year old.” Based on her childhood friendship with Raoul and the fact that she had been through four years of conservatory training that had already been completed before the events of the novel began she was more likely to have been in her early 20s.

Her age isn't stated explicitly, but based on her background information and her history with Raoul she's probably around 21, and is also described as having a heart "as pure as that of a 15-year-old" (take of that what you will). The Phantom also doesn't have his age explicitly stated but he's in all likelihood substantially older - probably in his late 30s or 40s.

Perhaps, but in the stage play, she is an adult with an adult job at a theater. The age of consent in France is 15.

American society is not comfortable with age differences in romantic relationships. When we see an older man and younger woman, we often automatically make generalizations.

The facts are that the Phantom's romantic love for Christine is unrequited. It's also important to remember his response when Christine asked if he was going to rape her: "The fate which condemns me to wallow in blood has also denied me the joys of the flesh". This is repeated when Christine kissed him and the Phantom cannot even put his arms around her in a hug. Not exactly sexual assault.
