"The play, about a pair of bohemian artists struggling to preserve their marriage at a time of political upheaval, was first staged on Broadway in 1964, five years after the arrival of Hansberry’s far better known work, “A Raisin in the Sun.” In 2018, writing in The New York Times Book Review, the playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins called “The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window” “a shattering study of liberal self-delusion and whiteness as an existential crisis” and declared the play “criminally neglected.”
The revival, which is scheduled to begin performances Feb. 4 and to open Feb. 23, will be directed by Anne Kauffman, who previously directed it in 2016 at the Goodman Theater in Chicago. Reviewing that production for The Chicago Tribune, the critic Chris Jones called the play 'a masterpiece lost in plain sight” and “a drama so infused with emotional intelligence, linguistic treasures and the human conditions of dread and longing that it keeps you bolt-upright in your seat for nearly three hours.'"
Anyone know how long this is running? Couldn't find the info on the website or article. (or have an idea how long plays at BAM usually run?)
Back in the day, I used to do a monologue from this play. LOVE the whole thing so much.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

They tend to be short runs. This will probably be a month give or take. I think that was the case with Cyrano. I wouldn’t sleep on it. The show I just saw at BAM was 4 performances.

For reference, 2020's Medea with Bobby Cannavale and Rose Byrne ran 8 weeks, and this year's Cyrano ran 7. Lungs, which never happened because of the pandemic, was scheduled for only 4.

Trying to plan ahead for the general on sale, what is the high end of the ticket price range? I tend to prefer to sit closer in orch if prices are in my budget. Or maybe I’ll get a membership if with 20% off I’d break even on 2 tickets lol.
I'd never thought I'd see a revival of this under-appreciated play in NYC and with a major star attached to boot. I first read this play when I was in high school and it completely gutted me and shook me to my core.
The original production didn't run very long (101 performances) and received mixed reviews. It starred Gabriel Dell in the title role and Rita Moreno as his wife Iris. Alice Ghostley and Dolph Sweet were also in the cast.
I guess it polarized audiences at the time with its frank observations on race and interracial relations, homosexuality, prostitution and prejudice.
I wonder which version of the play BAM is producing the original 3 act or the revised 2 act version.

In 2014, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival did a production. I thought it was strong. Two of the reasons the Broadway production failed, the audience and critics wanted another A RAISIN IN THE SUN and Ms Hasnberry offered a critique of white folx. In the video about the OSF 2014 production, the director and the dramaturg talk about it.
Anne Kaufman directed a truly radiant production at the Goodman Theatre in 2016, I wonder how similar the production will be. I'm sad I won't get to see it unless it transfers but happy this vital play continues to have life.
I went tonight. It’s certainly…unusual. The stars do not disappoint, but the play itself is all over the place. It’s the rare instance where leaving at intermission might have left me with a more favorable opinion.
