Tony Kushner has said that he wants to create a 10 part miniseries prequel to West Side Story focusing on Valentina's life based on the 30 page bio he wrote on the character. If it was made, would you watch it?
I'd start watching.....and finish if it were good.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
It’s Tony Kushner writing a WSS-adjacent period piece. There is no way it is any worse than “pretty good,” and probably much better than that. What I’d like the most is to someday see Kushner collaborate with his most prominent admirer/disciple, Mike Flanagan.
Absolutely not. I like Kushner, but IMO he and WSS do not mix. His screenplay was horrendous and completely unsuited to the material. It truly hit me when I read the script separate of the film and became exhausted by the expository, overly talky dialogue. Kush, give us something else! Anything.
10-part mini series?! WTF?!! A standard 2 hour Netflix film is more than enough. I personally feel the Valentina character was overused and I kept rolling my eyes every time she kept showing up. Her moments with Tony were beautiful, but then she was written into more scenes. In the original the adults were kept at a huge minimum. Valentina literally had more screen time than some of the lead Sharks and Jets. Oy!

If it wasn’t “talky” and discursive and unrealistically philosophical, it wouldn’t be Kushner. That’s his style, and it’s one that turns some people off, but hooks many more people in.
