Kristin and Robert Lopez have revealed they're working on a movie musical based on Jen Wang's graphic novel The Prince and the Dressmaker. Marc Platt is producing and Amy Herzog is writing the script.

I really enjoyed the novel and I'm intrigued by the idea of this story as a musical, though I hope it turns out animated instead of live-action (those character designs would translate naturally to animation). I'm not a big fan of the Lopezes and I haven't read or seen any Herzog plays, so I'm cautiously optimistic. What do you think of this project?

With adaptations of things I like, my hope is that they're good or bad enough that they at least make more people aware of the originals.

I read the graphic novel a while ago; it was nice, but IMO it didn't transcend the target young demographic at which it's primarily aimed. I remember liking that they gave the prince a character flaw or two, so that he wasn't just two-dimensionally sympathetic; but the rest of it didn't stay with me. Judging by 'Frozen', I'm guessing that an adaptation by this creative team will similarly work for kids but not so much for adults (or, not for this adult). But I'm fine with there being more musicals that other demographics can enjoy, so hey, bring it on.
