"Rocketman" Impressions/Reviews#1

Did anyone see the early access screening of "Rocketman" tonight?

What did people think?

I saw it, and it's much more a traditional musical than "Bohemian Rhapsody" with big musical numbers, and characters not just singing on stage.

Some reviews I read speculate that it has the potential for a Broadway adaptation down the line. In fact, some critics fault the film as being too much of a "musical".

I think Oscar nominations for best actor (Taron Egerton), and best costumes are a definite lock, and maybe even best picture, depending on the field.

People are definitely saying it's much better than "Bohemian Rhapsody", and I agree, even though the film isn't perfect.

It gets sluggish towards the end, but takes risks with the fantasy elements that mostly pay off, even with it's share of rock star story clichés.

I saw it earlier as well and thoroughly enjoyed it. I might take my mom to see it when it officially releases on 5/31. I also kept thinking, "This may/can be adapted into a stage production sometime" throughout the film. I was surprised at how much they committed to the musical numbers but at the same time it made sense being that it was Elton John, who was also closely working with the filmmakers and had a lot of say and input as it was his story. I haven't seen BH but I have heard a lot of comparisons to it, with Rocketman being the favorable film of the two. The biggest revelation for me was Taron Egerton, who is a hell of an actor and this film proved it! I hope he gets recognized with some nominations in the upcoming award season.

Also- Taron for Fiyero in the upcoming Wicked movie!

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY is a traditional bio film using the artist’s (Freddie Mercury/Queen) music in performance and recording moments.

ROCKETMAN is a jukebox musical like MAMMA MIA! only this time they use Elton John’s music to tell his story.
