I think Gypsy has the best Act I finale. It really gives me chills with the conclusion of "Everything's Coming Up Roses". And the scene itself is just so intense. A perfect way to end an act, and leave the audiences wanting more, and wondering what's going to happen next.

Cheers,
The Balladeer

Well, my age is howing once again:

The Bandwagon (1931) - the revolving stage whizzing around while the company sang I Love Louisa.

As Thousands Cheer (1933) - Clifton Webb serenading Marilyn Miller while the company paraded in sepia 1890 costumes.

On Your Toes (1936) - La Princess Zenobia Ballet.

Babes In Arms (1937) - Johnny One Note

Boys From Syracuse (193re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: Best Act 1 - Let Antipholus In with the girls dancing on in mock balanchine fashion on their hands.

Pal Joey (1940) - Joey Looks Into The Future, Gene Kelly and Vivienne Segal clink their glasses to success.

Panama Hattie (1940) - Ethel Merman in her best rauc0us, vulgar style singing Cole Porter's I'm Throwing A Ball Tonight.

By Jupiter (1942) - Ray Bolger bounding and bouncing across the stage while the company sings No, Mother, No.

Something For The Boys (1943) - Ethel Merman singing Leader of A Big Time Band in her best raucous, vulgar style.

Call Me Mister (1946) - The cast singing the title song.

Brigadoon (1947) - The Sword Dance, Agnes de Mlle's best choroegraphy.

Finian's Rainbow (1947) - Great Come and Get It Day.

A Tree Grows In Brooklyn (1951) - I'll Buy You A Star.

West Side Story (1957) - The Rumbe.

Gypsy (1959) - Everyone knows this one!

Hello Dolly (1964) -Before The Parade Passes By.

Funny Girl (1964) - Don't Rain On MY Parade

Fiddle On The Roof (1964) - Wedding Dance

Mame (1966)- the title song

Fiddler's Act One finale with the house and wedding being destroyed is incredibly powerful.

I also agree with Wicked and Ragtime.

The best has to be Everythings Coming Up Roses From Gypsy. So much energy, such strong will from Rose. I mean it just is the best. Better than any ensemble 1st Act Finale I have seen and I have seen My fair share. Updated On: 2/3/04 at 02:57 PM

Hmmm...I think my favorite would have to be "Defying Gravity" from Wicked. Idina gives me chills everytime!!

Also I have to agree with Les Mis and definitely RENT!!

Hmmm...Oh and I love the Act I finale of Millie. It's nothing over the top or flashy but it makes you crave more, no matter how many times you've seen it....

RENT-...just so alive with energy, and color.

Rocky Horror-Except I didn't really need to see Kristin Lee Kelly's breasts.

Wicked-Watching Idina up there and wondering how long it would take her to come down was amusing.

"One Day More" --Les Miz
"La Vie Boheme" --Rent
"Comfort and Joy" --Bat Boy
"Till We Reach That Day" --Ragtime

A rather redundant list, but they're all increadible songs that really capture the spirit of their shows

Urinetown
Bat Boy

The finale to act one of POTO gives me chills. The special effect might slowly be getting less spectacular, but in its day, it had a huge effect on the audience. I can't believe that the phans didn't already mention this one. Oh well, waiting anxiously for the movie.
