I have several friends who saw and loved it in London. It was brought back for a second engagement so must have been pretty popular. Unfortunately didn't get to see it myself.
It's a little too unfamiliar to me. I've never seen a West End show so a lot of the songs and jokes like ice cream being served during the intermission, which is apparently a big thing over there, was totally lost on me. And I shouldn't have even said intermission, it's interval, excuse me.
There's also a Box Office: the Musical that started circulating around community theaters fifteen or so years ago. Nothing that'll ever even hit even off Bway. The problem with these shows is that the cute songs about lines of complaining little old ladies are really only funny to theatre insiders or hardcore theatre goers. The general masses don't get it because they're the ones they're singing about and they hear the songs and go, "What? I don't see what's so wrong with what that little old lady with the tuna sandwich did. I mean she's gotta eat, right?"
Art has a double face, of expression and illusion.
Agreed. I think it's an interesting idea considering I'm sure a lot of the ushers didn't set out to become ushers, so who are these people? What were their dreams? etc. But yeah, it's def way too British to be done over here. But I really think the melodies are pretty and I look forward to seeing what the writing team does.
Also, if you YouTube it you can see them talking about the show. Now that is one FINE writing team. Damn.
